Duties
The successful candidate will represent the United States in a variety of affirmative civil enforcement practice areas including affirmative civil rights and environmental justice enforcement investigations, housing and fair lending, voting rights, language access, educational rights, servicemembers rights, the rights of institutional (including incarcerated) persons, pattern and practice of police misconduct, employment discrimination, reproductive justice rights, and Americans with Disabilities ACT (ADA) enforcement. The selectee will coordinate efforts with the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division and Office of Environmental Justice, making impactful decisions and ensuring justice for all. The selectee will, also, work closely with agency partners to educate and facilitate outreach events for the public and community members throughout the District to promote civil rights.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 years of post-J.D. legal or other relevant legal experience. Qualifying legal experience may include work as an attorney, as a judicial law clerk in either a Federal or State court and/or litigation experience in either public or private sector.

United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Hiring preference will be given to applicants with courtroom experience, ideally areas of civil rights and/or environmental justice enforcement, and who demonstrate an ability to perform those duties in an outstanding manner. The preferred candidate will have experience leading complex investigations and the demonstrated ability to identify strong cases; is comfortable taking and defending depositions of lay and expert witnesses, working with expert witnesses, including locating and preparing expert witness disclosures; is able to demonstrate a strong ability to communicate effectively with courts, colleagues, opposing counsel, community members, civil rights groups, and others; and, is able to organize and conduct effective community engagement. The preferred candidate should have substantive knowledge and expertise in law, rules, and regulations applicable to the position or substantially similar laws, rules, regulations and knowledge or experience working in two or more areas of federal civil rights laws enforced by the Department of Justice. Candidates should have strong academics; outstanding organizational skills; superior legal writing and research ability; and demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, community involvement, and public service. Applicants must demonstrate quick analytical ability and the ability to accurately articulate the critical issues involved in a case. Applicants must display strong interpersonal skills and good judgment, have excellent oral communication skills, exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies, and must have demonstrated capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer skills to include experience with automated research on the internet, electronic court filing, email, and word processing systems.
