The Health Technician perfoms highly complex tasks, enabling the registered nurse to assume responsibility for a greater number of patients. The incumbent serves as a Health Technician for the Intensive Care and Step Down Units at North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS).

Duties

Performs highly complex care tasks, enabling the RN to assume responsibility for a greater number of patients. Tasks may include: Discontinue peripheral IV locks (documents condition of site), assists with minor surgical procedures, perform phlebotomy/specimen collection, insert foley catheters and other specialized ICU tasks. Running 12 lead EKGs. Assumes responsibility of the immediate maintenance and cleanliness of reusable medical equipment (RME) used in the care of the patient and will be certified on the specific equipment for which they are responsible. Serves as a unit resource for equipment when appropriate and has received adequate training to serve as a unit expert ( examples ceiling lifts, beds). Assists the RN in transporting patients and transports patients who do not require telemetry monitoring. Assumes responsibility for restocking patient units and prepares the area to receive admissions. Recognizes emergencies and responds appropriately by seeking and providing assistance as necessary. Answers phones and intercom, relays messages appropriately. Assists the RN in post-mortem care. Observes, reports, and records pertinent observations and psychological reactions of patients to treatments which are significant in assisting the health care team to interpret progress and plan for patient's management. Utilizes the CPRS computer to retrieve and input pertinent patient/clinical information. Assumes positive person-to person relationships designed to motivate the patient to accept appropriate medical care and to educate and obtain the cooperation of the family in helping the patient to achieve emotional and social adjustment. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday days (07:30am-8:00pm) and nights (7:30pm-8:00am) and alternating weekends. Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician/PD01804A Physical Requirements: The work involves sitting, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, and heavy lifting (35 pounds and over). This requires the knowledge and expertise in using assistive devices such as the beds, ceiling lifts, walkers, slide boards and rollators, and in using proper body mechanics. Work Environment: The work is performed in one of the ICUs or the Medical-Surgical Step Down. The incumbent wears prescribed protective devices when in contact with contagious diseases and patients with contaminated drainage.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. AND Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Experience with safety practices and emergency lifesaving techniques. Experience maintaining positive interactions with health care staff. Experience establishing treatment goals for patients/or rehab techniques. Experience with bedside equipment and advanced technological equipment. Experience giving emotional support to patients as well as their families. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
