This position is located in the Facilities Engineering Unit of USDA's National Animal Disease Center (NADC) based in Ames, IA. In this position, you will perform a variety of duties involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and equipment using materials required by a carpenter.

Duties

Works with wood, metal, sheetrock, paint, plastics, and other materials for maintenance, repair, and alterations of the laboratory and outlying buildings. Uses carpentry and plastic trades methods such as sawing, gluing, jigging, clamping, routing, filing, grinding, sanding, and other required methods. Builds, modifies, repairs and installs shelves, cabinets, base units, shipping cartons, tables, benches, etc. Plans, computes, and lays out projects using knowledge of carpentry and shop mathematics to perform complex and exact projects. Uses a variety of equipment and hand tools such as electric and pneumatic band saws, drill presses, hammers, squares, pliers, screw drivers, tapes and other equipment as required in the trade.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 10/26/2023. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Carpenter, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Physical Effort Work is performed on benches, supports, ladders, scaffolds, roofs, in modules, around and under laboratory equipment which requires continuous standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and working overhead and in stretches cramped or awkward positions. May lift and carry items up to 40 lb. and occasionally lift items weighting over 50 lb. Working Conditions Subjected to toxic fumes from adhesives, glues; cuts, bruises and danger of flying plastic and wood splinters and chips from powered or hand tools; and falls when working in high places using ladders and scaffolds. Work is performed inside and outside under generally favorable conditions, but occasionally is performed outside in all kinds of weather. Must wear a full face respirator when working in biological control areas; restrictions of facial hair may be imposed for proper use of personal protective equipment.
