This position, located at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, Ambulatory Care & Processing section of the Medical Administration Service, performs the duties of a fully trained and experienced telecommunications operator and radio dispatcher.
Duties
Major duties of this position include but are limited to...
Monitors the operation of all communication/security and related electronic equipment
Coordinates with appropriate maintenance and engineering personnel to effect repairs in the event of a malfunction
Serves as the Facility Operator/Police Dispatcher; conducts all applicable radio checks including radio checks with uniformed police officers
Receives and resolves a variety of difficult calls requiring personal involvement on the part of the employee, such as threatening, abusive, or distraught callers; properly logs those of a high degree of activity into the departmental journal
Initiates call tracing, as authorized, with local telephone and police authorities on threatening calls
Serves as communications liaison with established Hospital Command System (HCS) in the event of disaster drills or actual events; activates the planned on-call Cascade system upon the orders of the Medical Center Leadership or established Command Center supervisor
Maintains s accurate radio/alarm activity records/logs to include dates, times, and results of communications and activity; responsible for the orderly flow of communications between the Police Operations and Chief offices, and uniformed patrol officers
Monitors security surveillance cameras and detects criminal activity in progress, suspicious behavior patterns, observes suspects, and known offenders, takes supporting law enforcement action
Furnishes information to persons regarding Police & Support Service policies and VA Regulations for the purpose of preventing infractions of VA Regulations and the prevention unnecessary police responses
Maintains the security of the information contained in any computerized system in accordance with the Privacy Act and other applicable laws, federal regulations, state regulations VA statutes and policy, as well as local Medical Center policy

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
General Experience: You must have one (1) year of general experience that includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position.
Examples of general experience for this position would typically include, but are not limited to...thorough knowledge of large and frequently changing organizations with complex subdivisions to direct incoming calls; skilled in dealing calmly and courteously with people who are extremely upset or irate and skill in questioning callers, who often can provide only sketchy information, in order to direct them to the proper organizational component, are required; knowledge of alternative routing options and procedures to make efficient outgoing connections and to connect high priority or emergency calls when ordinary methods fail; knowledge of the capabilities of the telephone system and skilled in the procedures necessary to connect a number of parties on one or both ends of complicated conference calls, and to arrange two-party or conference calls by appointment.. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed two (2) of post-high school education in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite...OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the high school level.
