ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: Department of Health & Health Human Services (HHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Southwest Region, Phoenix Area -Medical Services- Outpatient Department, Colorado River Service Unit, Parker Indian Health Center. Position is located in Parker Arizona. Position is supervised by the Supervisory Physician ( Deputy Clinical Director).
Duties
The Family Nurse Practitioner works independently to provide comprehensive primary care preventive, chronic disease management, and urgent care services to a panel of assigned patients in the primary care clinic:
Order, perform or interpret the results of diagnostic tests.
Analyze and interpret patient's histories, symptoms, physical findings or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care and professional practice guidelines.
Makes decisions concerning medical care needs of patients, which may involve various treatment modalities, prescribed medications, consults and referrals.
Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections and injuries.
Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage and frequencies.
Counsel patients about drug regimen and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications and herbal remedies.
Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
Education patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): All applicants must meet all the basic requirements:
Education: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Basic Requirements for the GS-11 Grade Level: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements.
Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; OR
At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
Minimum Qualifications for the GS-12: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicant must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Examples include: Independent work as an outpatient nurse practitioner providing primary care services to a panel of patients, including analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses; prescribing medications based on efficacy, safety and cost of legally authorized.
Minimum Qualifications for the GS-13: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Examples include: Independent management of a complex panel of patients providing comprehensive primary care services for preventive, chronic disease management, and acute care diagnoses, with expertise in common outpatient procedures, consultative services, and clinical outcome measures.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
