Duties

You will perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities that may include research and/or large industrial complexes. You will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and rescue vehicles. You will perform hazard and risk assessment techniques in completing initial incident analysis. You will comply with health and safety rules and procedures while treating victims. You will initiate established medical protocols in providing basic life support.

Requirements

  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZ-MAT spills, or possible explosions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.

Qualifications

GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; 2) Participating in the detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and 3) Performing driver/operator level maintenance and inspections and operating a variety of complex firefighting equipment including pumpers and/or aerial vehicles; and 4) Performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures. NOTE: This experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for this position. GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; and 3) Maintaining fire station and surrounding area to ensure things are neat and orderly. NOTE: This experience must be fully demonstrated in your resume to be considered for the position. ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications at the GS-5 level: Fire I, Fire II, and Airport Firefighter. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application.*** This position is a Primary Firefighter position and is covered under Special Firefighter Retirement. Title 5 U.S.C. 3307 authorizes the head of an agency to establish a maximum entry age for the original appointment of individuals to the position of primary firefighter. For initial appointments, applicants cannot have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment. An applicant reentering into a Primary Firefighter position may have the maximum entry age adjusted based on prior covered Firefighter federal service. Applicants who are entitled to veteran's preference may be eligible for a waiver to the maximum entry age requirement. Education

Applicants that do not meet the specialized experience as described above may qualify with education or a combination of experience and education, as follows:

GS-05:
Have successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree.
OR
Have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience equals one hundred percent.
