The Engineering Department of Eastern Oklahoma Healthcare System (EOVAHCS) is tasked with Plaster repair for the medical facility. The incumbent is assigned to the (EOVAHCS) Muskogee VA Medical facility in Muskogee Oklahoma. The position involves the painting, maintenance, repair, alteration or construction of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces, as well as, repair and patching of plaster and stucco surfaces.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. The incumbent works alone or with other tradesmen of the same or lower grade. The supervisor assigns work orally or through work orders. Ability to independently apply coating materials to various surfaces. The position involves the painting, maintenance, repair, alteration or construction of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces, as well as, repair and patching of plaster and stucco surfaces and other related materials. Incumbent has a working knowledge of plastering trade practices and must be skilled in application methods and techniques and the use of hand tools used in the trade. The incumbent has a thorough knowledge of accepted painting trade practices of surface preparation and coating, along with coating methods, materials, and techniques. Determines the methods, techniques, materials and application device best suited to obtaining the plastering finishes required. The incumbent has a thorough knowledge of accepted painting trade practices of surface preparation and coating, along with coating methods, materials, and techniques. The Plasterer will repair or construct a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone and other related surfaces. This incumbent will plan and lay out work, selecting the proper tools, and determining materials to be used. The Plasterer will mix the appropriate amounts of materials needed for proper plaster formation, apply the plaster skillfully, and finish all surfaces as necessary. Must be skilled in the use of tools common to the trades such as angle trowels, trowel and float, screeds, daby, plasterer's hawk, straight edges, rollers, spray guns, thickness gauges, graining devices, brushes, sponges, etc. The incumbent uses all hand and power tools of the plaster, masonry and painting trades in completing work assignments. Occasionally the Maintenance Mechanic is required to do heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds) while carrying blocks, bags of mortar, scaffolding, ladders, etc. Thorough knowledge and skill needed for the application of coating materials. Must be knowledgeable of the hazards associated with the materials used daily and correctly stores and disposes of thinners, oil paints, turpentine, etc. Knowledge of proper set conditions prior to applying additional coats, and final surface. The Plasterer adheres to all safe working practices. Skill in applying base coats to ensure adherence to surfaces. Knowledge and skill to remove such things as scale, rust, dirt, and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly. Physical Requirements: Incumbent is subject to continual standing, stooping, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending and work in tiring and un comfortable positions. Maintenance Mechanic works on scaffolds, ladders and in cramped quarters. Frequently lifts, sets up, and carries materials and/or equipment which weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the Maintenance Mechanic is required to do heavy li fting (up to 100 pounds) while carrying blocks, bags of mortar, scaffolding, ladders, etc. Working Conditions: The Plasterer is frequently exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and working with plaster and masonry materials. Exposed to the danger of falling from ladders and scaffolds. The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. Mo st work is done indoors where temperature extremes are not present, but is subjected to extremes of temperatures when working outdoors on walks, curbs, etc. Occasionally, the employee may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
