Duties
Responsible for reviewing the nursing scope of care, utilizing a systematic plan of nursing objectives. Ensures that nursing standards of patient care and standards of nursing practice are developed and consistent with professional standards (i.e., American Nurses' Association (ANA) Nursing and Correctional Nursing Standards). Measures, assesses, and improves patient outcomes through developing and implementing nursing standards of patient care and nursing standards of practices. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation agency requirements, such as the Joint Commission, State Board of Nursing, BOP National Policies, and American Nurses’ Association (ANA) Standards including Correctional Nursing Standards. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. AND Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. AND In addition to the Basic Requirements: Education/Experience: GS-12 and GS-13: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position. AND GS-12 and GS-13: At least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: GS-12:
Experience in evaluating all patient and staff medical/nursing problems; completing patient assessments and personal interviews.
Experience in developing and coordinating a thorough, effective orientation program for all Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and Unit Clerks assigned to the Health Service Unit.
Experience in directing the delivery of nursing care in emergency situations utilizing protocols and standing orders based on recommendations of the American Heart Association.
GS-13:
Experience in ensuring nursing standards of patient care and standards of nursing practice are developed and consistent with professional standards.
Experience in developing patient care programs, policies, and procedures that depict how patients' nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.
Experience in ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation agency requirements, such as the Joint Commission, State Board of Nursing, BOP National policies, and ANA Standards, including Correctional Nursing standards.
