NOTE: This is a 4-year Term 7306 appointment.
Dentist Applicants - Education and length of practice (experience) will be considered by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. Exceptions to the salary care must be approved.
This is a Pay Table 5 Tier 1 position. Salary range $145,000 to $310,000
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week

The Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry (AUSHD) is a position defined in Title 38 United States Code §7306(b)(2) as a qualified doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine who shall be directly responsible to the Under Secretary for Health for the Operation of Dental Service. The AUSHD is also organizationally responsible to the Deputy to the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Clinical Services. The incumbent serves as the principle clinical executive for Dentistry in VHA.
The AUSHD functions as the principal dental executive in the Office of the Assistant under Secretary for Health for Clinical Services (AUSH/CS) by utilizing and applying clinical skills and knowledge in managing clinical and administrative aspects of the dental program for the purpose of nationwide improvement of dental care, oral health outcomes, and the appropriateness and timeliness of care provided.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR DENTIST:
U.S. Citizen
Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence.
Residency or Comparable Experience. Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients.
Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The dentist must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA.
DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess extensive leadership experience in the health care arena sufficient to qualify for the equivalent of a senior executive equivalent position within the Federal service. In addition, the incumbent is broadly acquainted with clinical treatment modalities, administrative and clinical support systems and is knowledgeable about multifaceted health care delivery systems.
In addition to basic requirements, the following executive core qualifications are required for this position. Typically, these qualifications would be gained through education, experience and training which reflect progressive development and achievement in responsible management/executive level assignments in health care at a national or Network level, equivalent positions in a hospital/network/regional office or allied medical care facility, or executive positions in an academic institution. An individual's total experience and education must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. If you are currently a federal employee, this type of experience is typically found at positions at the GS-15 level and above.

Physical Requirements: Most of the work performance is at a desk, in an office setting. The incumbent often carries books and papers to and from meetings and conferences. It is highly likely that the incumbent may have to travel between office buildings for meetings, which will involve going outside during various elements of weather.
