About the Position: The position of Engineering Equipment Operator (MVO) performs a variety of work at the Saylorville Lake Project Office in Johnston, Iowa. Work is primarily equipment operation and maintenance with associated routine maintenance, welding, concrete finishing, and carpentry work. Incumbent will also transport a variety of equipment on assorted trailers project wide.

Duties

Perform preventive maintenance and repair work to ensure engineering equipment is usable. Safely operate equipment such as bull dozers, motor grades, tractors, pavement rollers, and motor trucks as well as small power equipment such as chainsaws. Operate equipment on land and barges. Utilize equipment to push and grade or load and relocate material such as earth, riprap, and gravel, clear brush and stubble or tree stumps, and cut weeds and grass. Perform maintenance grading on levees and roads, establish ditches on existing roadways, and reestablish fore-slopes and back-slopes. Secure loads and ensure applicable permits are obtained before transporting. Perform basic maintenance on equipment utilized.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position is subject to random drug testing in accordance with EP 600-1-3.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Must possess or obtain within 6 months of appointment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class A) and maintain this license as appropriate.

Considerable strain is encountered resulting from vibration, jerking, jolting, etc., in operation over rough surfaces. Because of location of controls, is required to work in awkward or strained positions. WORKING CONDITIONS-Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, usually in an open driver's seat (or partially protected cab), on a variety of terrain and soil conditions of the types mentioned above. Employee is exposed to the possibility of equipment overturning and subject to normal power and hand equipment operational noise, dust, vibrations, fumes, or other injuries. Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
