The employee will be assigned to work in the Logistics Department and will be supervised by the Expendable Supply (EX) Supervisory Inventory Management Specialist. The position provides expendable medical supplies from distribution inventory stock to inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and other patient treatment areas within VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and will also collect, clean/reprocess, tag, and redeploy Non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (NRME) throughout the VA Medical Center.
Duties
The primary purpose of the Non-critical RME position is to follow cleaning or sterilization based on manufacturer, and infection prevention requirements. NRME is that equipment which does not invasively penetrate the patient's skin yet is vital to patient care. NRME includes but is not limited to: IV pumps and channels, IV poles, SCD Machines, Feeding Pumps, Crash Carts, Hypo Thermal Blankets/Warmers, Portable Suction Units, Isolation Caddies, and Bed Rail Pads.
Major Duties include but not limited to:
Complete competency evaluation for receiving call-in supply requests, item research, alternate location research, distribution order entry, Supply delivery robot safety and operation procedures.
Answer phone requests for material, ensuring that the following information is taken: caller's name and call back number; ward, clinic, service-line; name and description of items requested (IMF number is preferred); unit of issue and quantity requested.
Prepare requested items for transport via robot or hand delivery; load items into robot and dispatch for delivery. If robots are both dispatched, hold items until next robot returns; hand deliver requested items to requesting party if items are time critical.
Monitors expiration dates, rotates stock to limit outdates and removes items from outdated and short dated items from inventory use as appropriate.
Distributes items according to established or ad hoc requirements in computerized inventory management system. Utilizes a pager or similar device to expedite the pick/delivery of items needed in user areas throughout the VA HCS and supported catchment areas. Fills
requests for items based on daily schedules of need or on an emergent basis as appropriate.
Apply training and resourcefulness to research where various items are used and stored if distribution stock levels are low. Retrieve needed medical supplies from closed clinics or low use inventories and redeliver to wards, clinics or treatment areas where items are needed for current usage.
Process, release and post distribution order pick ticket to record item usage.
Scan secondary inventory locations as outlined by Supervisor or Lead. Generate pick tickets, pick and stage distribution orders for dispatch, delivery, and restocking by following shift Supply Technicians
Don Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) prior to collection of NRME for reprocessing.
Collect dirty NRME from Ward, OR, Clinic and other treatment area Soiled Utility rooms and transport to Sterile Processing Section (SPS) cleaning area.
Clean all dirty NRME collected in approved cleaning area using approved cleaning methods as mandated by manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU), and Infection Prevention policy in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Ensure all cleaned NRME is tagged
as "CLEAN" and covered as applicable prior to redeployment.
Sequester unserviceable NRME to designated area, and complete report for EX Supervisor.
Redeploy/distribute cleaned NRME to appropriate Ward, Clinic, or other patient treatment areas to meet PAR levels as prescribed by SOP or Supervisor's direction.
Report PAR stock deficiencies of NRME to EX Supervisory Inventory Management Specialist daily to facilitate redistribution of assets from low use areas as availability allows.
Prepare and submit work order for sequestered unserviceable NRME; print copy of work order, place in Ziplock bag and attach to unserviceable unit.
Ensure stock of cleaning supplies for dirty NRME is adequate for the next shift.
Work Schedule: Wednesday to Saturday, 7:00a.m. to 5:50p.m.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-4) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Wearing Personal Protective Equipment prior to collection of NRME for reprocessing;
Clean dirty Non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (NRME) from medical areas;
Redeploy/distribute clean NRME to designated areas;
Report stock deficiencies of NRME to Supervisor
Prepare items for transport
Answer request for equipment. or education to qualify for this position.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education to meet the total experience requirements. (i.e. 6 months of specialized experience and 3 years of education above the high school level). NOTE: Only education beyond the second year can be used in combination with specialized experience to qualify for this grade. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Physical Requirements: Requires considerable walking, bending, standing, lifting, and handling of equipment and supplies. Requires dexterity in performing technical procedures. Proper body mechanics should always be utilized.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a patient care soiled utility and/or clean or sterile supply storage area where there is occasional and sporadic exposure to infectious and contagious diseases through frequent contact with contaminated NRME. Exposure to odors and other risks, as
well as other diseases, require special health and safety precautions such as wearing protective clothing, gloves, masks or face shields. Flexibility and caution in the performance of duties is required. Due to the nature of the position, periodic testing for hepatitis is required. Work is also performed in a material distribution environment including storage areas with racking and shelving, loading docks, and supply rooms.
