The Supervisory Deputy ACOS/GECS will assist the ACOS, GEC in providing leadership and direction for the GEC staff and its programs, to include, Geriatric Medicine Clinics (GeriPACT, Geriatric Consultation/Geriatric Evaluation), Hospice and Palliative Care program, Community and Contract Nursing Home Services, Community Living Center, Home Based Primary Care and Home-Based Transitional Care.
Duties
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The Supervisory Deputy ACOS/GEC is responsible for the management of patients (inpatients or outpatients) to include history and physical examination, medical care management, coordination of consultation, and referral of patients, as deemed appropriate. And provide technical counsel necessary to meet clinical, procedural, legal, and administrative requirements relating to the care and treatment of veterans ensuring utilization of patient care resources in a cost effective, efficient, and timely manner.This may include but not limited to the following:
In conjunction with the ACOS, GEC, is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, implementing, and refining a comprehensive patient management/clinical support/ administrative program which provides services.
Familiar with administrative procedures, quality measurement, regulations related to the practice of medicine, Long-Term Care Standards, The Joint Commission, Long-Term Care surveying bodies and other regulatory standards pertinent to Geriatrics and Extended Care.
Knowledge of acute illness, complex chronic diseases, and mental illnesses as well as end-of-life care.
Development and operation of quality assurance and utilization programs as well as peer reviews/professional performance evaluations to ensure provision of high-quality care.
Supervises other GEC service physicians and non-physician providers, and oversees clinic scheduling, coverage, management, and provider productivity.
Works with other GEC section chiefs to ensure high quality care is delivered in individual sections and helps develop plans to address quality performance metrics.
Is involved in teaching and supervision of medical residents, hospice and palliative medicine fellows and other trainees in inpatient and outpatient GEC settings.
Works with other services to improve care of geriatric patients' facility-wide and meet regulatory requirements, based on settings of care.
Helps with long-term strategic planning and development of objectives, priorities and timelines for the GEC service and management of staffing, space, and budget.
Covers for ACOS, GEC and/or other GEC Section Chiefs during absences to ensure seamless operation of GEC service.
Ensure clinical input in the development and management of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) business architecture, which structures and communicates the VHA healthcare business, and includes descriptions of business behaviors, functionality, processes, and the flow of information that is required to achieve VHA's mission.
Supervise professional and non-professional staff to accomplish the work of the Geriatrics and Extended Care Department.
Assure that Geriatrics and Extended Care Department staff under their supervision are appropriately trained and competent to perform their jobs.
Plan work to be accomplished, set, and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
Ensure that all local, VISN and national policies are implemented properly and in a timely manner.
Performs other duties as assigned and as flexible as possible.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8am-4:30pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The physician may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs)
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program in Geriatrics leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Board Certified in Geriatrics.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
Preferred 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience in health care setting.
Preferred 5 years Geriatric Medicine: Outpatient Clinic, Long/Short Term Care, Home-Based Primary Care, Palliative Care Experience, and works with Veterans.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, hands and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing and able to hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally and mentally stable in order to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others.
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
