This position exists within the Audiology service at the Kansas City VAMC with coverage to various audiology sites as deemed necessary by workload demands. The audiologist at this level plans, conducts, and coordinates all aspects of diagnostic evaluation and treatment of hearing impairment and/or balance disorders.

Duties

For all assignments above full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity, and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The audiologist (clinical specialist) provides leadership and directs oversight in the design, development, implementation, planning and management of the specialty program. Serves as a coach or facilitator for an interdisciplinary team and is responsible for training all support staff and trainees as it relates to the specialty program. This individual serves as the SME in matters regarding the specialty program. Evaluates the specialty program to ensure deadlines and goals are met. This incumbent has special clinical program responsibilities of inter disciplinary teams or highly specialized clinical programs including tinnitus and hyperacusis management and aural rehabilitation. This incumbent is also the liaison between Audiology and Whole Health Service. Demonstrates an extensive range of professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, contemporary audiology practice theories, principles, and methodologies to a wide range of populations. Develops and conducts coherent assessment and treatment strategies independently. Demonstrates the ability to effectively interact with all healthcare stakeholders to include consultation. Supervises, instructs, evaluates, and mentors student trainees regarding the field of audiology. Keeps current with theory and practice of audiology through continuing education and maintains compliance with VHA, certification, and licensure education requirements. Participates in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs, and evaluation of existing programs. Maintains supplies, equipment, and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency. Attends regular staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate, reviews policies and procedures, and attends in-service training. May participate in research activities pertinent to clinical audiology. The incumbent may be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data. May be requested to serve on service-level committees or task forces or to represent the service on medical center, network, or national committees. Displays knowledge of and complies with all safety rules/regulations. Promptly reports all accidents and notifies supervisor of unsafe condition in the workplace. Participates in facility and service level safety training as directed by supervisor or safety program manager. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the processes for reusable medical equipment including knowledge of standard operating procedures and abides by service and medical center policies. Maintains patient records and other data as required and abides by service and medical center health information and health record policies. Follows applicable informed consent and HIPAA rules on privacy and protecting patient rights. Work Schedule: 7:30am-4:00pm Monday - Friday, OR. Four 10 hour shifts . Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Language: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Licensure: Hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. Education: Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. HR office staff and management officials may verify the program accredited from CAA at www.caa.asha.org. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Audiologist (Clinical Specialist), GS-13 Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-12). Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required: (a) Advanced knowledge in a focused area of contemporary audiology practice to provide oversight of a specialty program. (b) Skill to evaluate the specialty program to ensure deadlines and goals are met. (c) Skill to coordinate initiatives and build consensus among interdisciplinary team members. References: VA Handbook 5005/152, Part II, Appendix G29. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13. Physical Requirements: Incumbent has vision in both eyes with ability to distinguish colors and shades; use of arms, hands, and fingers; use of legs with ability to bend repeatedly and to walk and stand for 6 hours per day; ability to hear; ability to drive and have a driver license; ability to travel to other clinic sites; ability to manage outside and inside environments; ability to tolerate fumes and odors; ability to work with audiology machinery and parts; ability to work closely with others, work alone, assist patient care using safe approved modalities. Desk work, computer work, patient care work, audiology technical testing and hearing aid work is required.
