The Harry Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, is recruiting for a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) Coordinator. This position reports to the Chief of Sterile Processing Service.

Duties

Major Duties: Provides oversite and delivery of all Reusable Medical Devices (RMD). Interacts administratively with all services that are impacted with RME. This includes, but not limited to: Surgery, Imaging, Nursing, Dental and more. Notifies the Chief/Assist Chief of Sterile Processing of any anticipated RMD acquisitions for evaluation of ability to comply with manufacturer's recommendations for reprocessing. The incumbent will manage RMD according to the Sterile Processing Services (SPS) Directives. The incumbent will collaborate with RMD Champions and Nurse Managers/Designee for specialty service/ Clinics and OR on the proper procedures for maintaining RMD inventory to include par levels, use and storage, FIFO techniques and all aspects of Primary and Secondary RME inventories. The incumbent will analyze using service(s) on the use of RMD and identify areas of interface between services. S/he will coordinate with the multiple services to ensure that the full continuum of activities pertaining to storage, handling and inventorying is present and consistently maintained. This incumbent requires knowledge of American National Standards (ST79) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) as well as Infection Prevention principles to actively participate in rounds to identify and verify the environments cleanliness, temperature, humidity, storage, Par levels and overall storage areas are meeting standards where RMD is stored. This position will require routine RMD Audits coordinated by the incumbent throughout the facility where any critical or semi critical RMD is used. These required audits require leadership, experience and knowledge using Infection Prevention, AAMI and ST79 standards for unannounced and announced RMD tracer and audits that are required by Central Office. Assures all users of critical and semi critical RMD are following SOPs and Infection Prevention Principles for RMD storage and delivery to its return to SPS for reprocessing. The incumbent must complete Level I and Level II training thereby obtaining Certified Registered Medical Supply Technician status. Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RMD in decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well. Disassembles the RMD and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions. Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris V-Pro Max, high level disinfecting re-processors. May be required to prepare operating room case carts daily utilizing surgery schedule. Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing. Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization, assembles basic sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room. Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RMD). Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center. Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes. Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 10:00am-6:30pm. Schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs to the hospital. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) RME Coordinator Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-6) level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds in order to assess the needs of the department. Ability to coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion. Ability to interpret and apply sterile processing/infection prevention regulations and policies. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment. Ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in carrying out sterile processing functions. Preferred Experience: Health Care Processing Association certificate. References: Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G47 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position include work assignments with long periods of standing, walking, pushing, lifting, bending, stretching. This position requires the ability to lift 50lbs . The incumbent may at times be required to climb up and down a step stool in the work area. Work days may be extended without notice by emergency RME requests from operating room, clinics or nursing wards
