This Health Technician position is located at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center in the Acute Care Nursing Division, Ambulatory Procedure Center & Post Anesthesia Care Unit (APC/PACU).
Duties
The Health Technician assists physicians in the performance of procedures in the APC/PACU, provides patient and equipment monitoring support, and operates and maintains all surgical and procedural equipment. The employee assists in the orientation and training of newly assigned staff and provides technical guidance for junior health technicians.
Major Duties:
Provides technical support to the medical and surgical staff, residents, and APC/PACU personnel.
Calibrates, operates and maintains a wide variety of physiologic monitoring, measuring and computing devices.
Trouble-shoots equipment and provides support to staff.
Maintains/assembles supplies, operates equipment and assists in performing diverse therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Collects and labels blood specimens, and places peripheral IVs.
Assists with patient care duties, including personal cares, positioning and transferring in and out of bed, and CPO coverage.
Assists RNs with transferring patients for procedures in other services or with transfers to general units.
Assists with pre and post-operative and procedural care.
Establishes and maintains physiological monitoring systems.
Maintains bedside patient care supplies, and restocking of supplies and linens.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Work Schedule: Full time, 8 hour shifts with varying start times between 5:00am and 8:00am dependent on the need of the service, primarily 6:00am to 2:30pm.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/17/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: Must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-5) in the Federal Service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health Technician. Specialized experience includes: Working with the operational principles, procedures, calibration, and maintenance of sophisticated analytical, monitoring, and computing medical instrumentation. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Working with infection control procedures and aseptic techniques. Knowledge of the functions and operational principles of various life support systems. Knowledge and understanding of preoperative and procedural patients and the practices of the APC/PACU in order to perform routine duties.

Education: Must have successfully completed 9 semester hours of graduate education, which meets the specialized experience requirement ONLY in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Combination: Must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education AND specialized experience which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
Certification in Basic CPR is Required.

Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of standing, as well as considerable walking, bending, lifting, crouching, moving equipment and positioning patients. The work also requires agility and dexterity to handle delicate and complex medical instrumentation.
