The Long Beach VA Health Care System is recruiting (1) Inpatient Pharmacy Technician within the Pharmacy Service at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center.. The incumbent will be proficient in covering all shifts and areas of the inpatient pharmacy section. The incumbent will also be proficient in providing support to the inpatient pharmacists, Sterile Compounding Program Manager, and pharmacy management team as assigned.

Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Performs a variety of complex technical functions that include preparing IV admixtures (large and small volume), piggybacks, pre-filled syringes, and ready-to-use admixtures, besides labeling and delivering, in a timely manner, all sterile piggybacks and admixtures used in this Medical Center.
Delivers medications and pharmacy supply items, including hazardous medications and controlled substances, for use in different hospital units and clinics as identified by the pharmacist in charge (PIC) and/or direct supervisor.
Regularly acts as the first-line communication between the Service and medical staff to serve patients' needs either in-person or over a communication device (e.g., telephone, Vocera, MS Teams, pagers, etc.). The incumbent may answer routine questions from other healthcare providers regarding medication orders' delivery and availability of drugs and dosage forms stocked at the facility. Questions pertaining to professional areas such as chemistry, pharmacology, patients' clinical needs, and specific or complex drug information will be deferred to a pharmacist.
Assists in the revision and implementation of section management procedures and assumes a leadership role within the scope of the assignment.
Demonstrates understanding of the general workflow of the inpatient pharmacy and the duties and responsibilities pertaining to each Medical Center area. Additional training will be provided to cover specialty areas. Once the training is completed, the technician will be proficient in providing coverage for the designated specialty area as assigned.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-6 Pharmacy Technician
Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment
Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6.
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing/sitting for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., and bending/stooping. The work may entail repetitive wrist movement while using various size syringes, vial cap removal, and typing.
