Duties
The Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve, protect and enhance the abundance and diversity of native plant, fish and wildlife species and the ecosystems on which they depend throughout the 7.2 million acre Connecticut River watershed. The refuge is the only multi-state watershed based National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. The refuge is comprised of more than 40,000 acres within parts of the four watershed states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The position is based out of the refuge's office/visitor center at the Nulhegan Basin Division. The position is primarily responsible for maintaining buildings, infrastructure and equipment at the refuge's divisions in Vermont and New Hampshire.

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Operates a variety of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications.
Completes repairs to building and facility electrical systems such as lighting and power fixtures, wiring, fire or water alarm systems, and emergency power systems.
Repairs and replaces roofs and removes old roofing on structures using roofing materials and accessories such as composite shingles, corrugated metal, rubber, roofing felt, asphalt, venting, and flashing.
Performs plumbing tasks on various buildings and structures by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems.
Performs the painting and coating work to the buildings and facilities by brushing, rolling, and spraying, using coating materials.
Applies herbicides and insecticides using trailer, backpack and hand sprayers.
Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles; replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses.
Perform repairs on heavy equipment and machinery such as removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components.
Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated and keep equipment log books up-to-date at all times.

- Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
- This position may require the employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to operate various vehicles and equipment.
- Incumbent must maintain certification on all equipment they operate.
- Incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Incumbent may be required to Obtain and Maintain a USFWS chainsaw certification.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
