About the Position: This position is in support of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) located at Travis Air Force Base.

Duties

Supervises biological technologists and technicians and other scientists. Provides advisory services on specific problems, projects, programs, and functions in assigned program areas. Conduct biological laboratory tests and investigations including operations involving food borne pathogens, vector borne, zoonotic and infectious diseases Provides advisory services on specific problems, projects, programs, and functions in assigned program areas. Plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates complex microbiology programs requiring application of advanced management and organizational principles, and a wide range of qualitative and quantitative techniques.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
• This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time.
• This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
• Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

BASIC REQUIREMENT for Microbiology: Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Microbiology (0403): Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes professional knowledge of medical technology/microbiology, and skill in applying, all principles, theories, practices, concepts, terminology, policies, methodology and procedures to perform the full range of independent duties ; full range of knowledge on microbiological analytical testing programs; comprehensive and thorough knowledge of quality assurance guidelines; interpret scientific data using recognized statistical methods; prepare samples for proficiency testing and quality assurance purposes.
