The National Eye Institute is recruiting for a Supervisory Photographer (Medical/Ophthalmic) who has supervisory experience, as well as supporting the mission providing high-quality, standardized, reproducible clinical ocular images and accurate image-related data in support of the NEI Intramural Clinical Research Program.

Duties

Assesses current staffing, needs for modification, and develops plans for implementation of modification. Makes recommendations on proper structure and staffing. Responsible for preparing work schedules to assure that appropriate clinical coverage is available at all times. Manages personnel functions including preparing job descriptions, recruiting, interviewing, training, directing, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating technical and support staff. Provides guidance to section employees on problems arising out of the performance of their duties, advising or informing them of leave regulations, retirement, morale issues, and working conditions. Fully proficient in the operation of all off-the-shelf specialized eye cameras, regulatory agency-approved ophthalmic imaging devices, and the many digital imaging software platforms employed to run these instruments in an ophthalmology clinical research setting. Includes the current generation of chip-based single-lens reflex cameras (SLRs), traditional and modified retinal fundus cameras (mFCs), scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLOs), and confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (cSLOs). Independently and skillfully handles several rare vintage ocular cameras and a number of uncommon cutting-edge photographic devices. Knows the specific photographic objectives for all imaging procedures and the exacting imaging requirements for each research study being conducted at the NEI in order to accurately interpret EMR imaging requests request forms when triaging, to facilitate communication with staff clinicians or principal investigators regarding orders, and to enable the capture of acceptable study images that meet the strict parameters of the research studies. Prepares job aids and develops training tools to enable the staff photographers to follow the rigorous parameters of image capture for clinical research studies. Well-versed in ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of the human eye, and the ocular circulatory system. Extensive base of knowledge of both common and rare ocular pathologic conditions, along with a solid understanding of the hemodynamics of the inner eye. Plan and conduct a successful imaging session even when deviations from the normal patterns are encountered. Skilled at operating and navigating the NEI electronic medical record (EMR), a computerized patient chart and order entry system, to enter image-related data and retrieve patient-related information. Provides designs for the EMR template used by NEI physicians to order images for patient care and clinical research and provides input for periodic updates and revisions.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: use complex ocular imaging equipment to capture ocular images per exacting study protocol requirements; receive and triage complex study specific imaging orders; use experimental non-FDA approved imaging equipment authorized only within specific study parameters; and utilize non-standard imaging modules and capture specialized slit-lamp images.
