This position is physically located at the Danville, Illinois VA Medical Center.
The Section Chief of Podiatry is responsible for providing podiatric services to eligible veterans while providing oversight, management, evaluation, leadership, and guidance to all Staff Podiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, and other staff in the Podiatry Section of the Specialty Service.
Duties
Serve as the Lead Podiatrist for VAIHCS and performing all responsibilities assigned to that role as defined by VHA Directive 1122 (Podiatric Medical and Surgical Services).
Provide podiatric services in outpatient, urgent care, inpatient, and telehealth settings, including the diagnosis/treatment/management of podiatric medical and surgical disorders and conditions.
Perform podiatric procedures in the operating room and office setting.
Perform clinical review, triage, and management of podiatric consults.
Play active role in teaching of trainees including residents, medical students, and others, when appropriate.
Ensure accurate and timely medical record documentation.
Participate in committees, peer review process, and other administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Chief of Specialty Service, the Medical Director of Specialty Medicine/Surgery, or other designee.
Supervise assigned staff in the Podiatry Section.
Complete and maintain position descriptions/functional statements, performance plans, performance appraisals, and any other relevant evaluations for assigned staff.
Oversee recruitment, interview, and evaluation process for new candidates for positions in the Podiatry Section.
Create and maintain schedules and work hour assignments for assigned staff.
Manage issues related to complaints, grievances, discipline, and adverse actions for assigned staff.
Assist Residency Program Director with the administration of the Podiatry Residency Program.
Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, directives, and regulations by assigned staff.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Podiatrist Basic Requirements
Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
A Section Chief must also demonstrate the following:
(1) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; and
(2) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs, within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to, medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement.
Board Certification: Required at Chief level

The full performance level of this vacancy is 15.
Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
