Incumbent functions in the Dental Laboratory as a fully qualified and experienced technician. His/her advice is sought on a regular and recurring basis by the staff dentist. Applies an in-depth knowledge of a full range of Dental Laboratory Services and Functions, and exhibits the seasoned judgement normally expected by this journeyman specialist.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to Directly collaborates with staff dentist, prosthodontist, oral surgeons, periodontists and implant ologists to design and fabricate complex dental or intra-oral maxillofacial appliances. Advises in the design of unique prostheses for trauma and cancer patients where oral tissue is mutilated or missing and independently completes all laboratory procedures on these complex cases. Constructs routine full and partial dentures, dental splints and obturators, model work for fixed protheses and other laboratory products to support the treatment needs of staff dentists. Functions include poring primary and final impressions, fabricating custom trays, fabricating bite rims; fabricating night guards; fabricating provisional protheses; repairing broken prostheses; adding teeth to prostheses; pouring and pinning final crown and bridge impressions; sectioning dies; fabricating fluoride trays; fabricating stints; fabricating transitional partials, managing implant fabrication process and fabricating wrought wire clasps. Dental laboratory technician research latest materials and technology associated with prothesis fabrication and modification or repair. Provides on-the-training and basic dental laboratory instruction to special individuals (dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental students and residents) assigned on an intermittent basis for understudy or training in terminology, morphology, oral anatomy, dental materials and use of tools and equipment. Advise in the design of unique protheses for trauma and cancer patients where oral tissue is mutilated or missing and independently completes all laboratory procedures on these complex cases. Suggestions for procurement are usually accepted therefore incumbent has significant input into expenditures of public funds. Perform other job related duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/16/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirements - Specialized Experience Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. AND Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-08 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition. Read and interpret dentist prescription for routine laboratory procedures. Knowledge of the oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition. Skilled in using laboratory material , tools and equipment. Working with dental staff to design and fabricate dental or intra-oral appliances. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed two full years of graduate education or a master's degree that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. Transcript Required. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the first 18 semester hours that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Long periods of standing, sitting and bending are required. It is necessary to climb onto counters in order to replenish plaster bins. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds form the floor to the counter to the plaster bins is required.
