The Lead MRI Radiologic Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The incumbent works closely with the technologists, Chief Technologist, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, personnel safety, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, patient satisfaction and safety.

Duties

Major duties include, but not limited to: Responsible for the quality of image data produced in MRI. This includes but is not limited to correct operation of all MRI and ancillary equipment, application of accessory devices, positioning, selection and manipulation of sequences and options, and post processing functions. Participates in the evaluation of employees. Responsible for the evaluation and completion of competency checklists process under the direction of the Chief Technologist. Reports conduct issues, performance issues, absences, and tardiness to Chief Technologist. Recognizes and addresses deficiencies in performance or conduct whenever possible, at the informal level, and reports outcomes to the Chief Technologist. Staff Training: Responsible for the training of new technologists in MRI, in the performance of procedures specific to that modality and organizational practices of the specific unit. Reviews formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs and makes recommendations management. Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of MRI supplies are available to meet workload demands. Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair of MRI and ancillary equipment. Serves as the liaison between Imaging Service and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Clinic Scheduling: Oversees the MRI clinic appointment scheduling determining the maximum number of procedures which can be performed in a designated time frame, to decrease backlog and accommodate emergent examinations utilizing system redesign principles. The Lead Technologist ensures the performance of and maintains all documentation and record keeping related to each examination. The Lead Technologist is responsible for the accurate recording of workload through CPRS, VistA registration and case edit including updating of CPT codes and procedures. Coordinates and maintains research projects that include MRI imaging. Assures proper performance and record keeping for approved research protocols. Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Confers directly with radiologists to determine requirements of standard imaging procedures. The Lead Technologist is responsible for implementation and adherence to the Quality Control Program and for quality assurance of MRI examinations. Performs MRI examinations including but not limited to head, neck, spine, chest, cardiac, breast, abdomen, and extremities with and without the use of contrast materials. Performs image manipulation and reconstruction on advanced workstations to provide optimal image data. Provides education to patients about procedures and answers questions and receives and follows-up on patient complaints. Prepares and administers contrast materials. Responsible for the training of staff MRI technologists in IV access and contrast administration via power injector, applying all safety practices and protocols. Basic Requirements: 1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 2. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] 3. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs [at the GS-9 level and below]. [The incumbent] provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): i. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. ii. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. iii. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. iv. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Preferred Experience: Strong Patient Care Skills in a Hospital Setting. Performing a wide range of MRI exams including Cardiac MRI. MRI protocoling. Knowledgeable in MRI safety and Implant Clearance/Review. Participation in Committees/ Meetings Related to MRI Safety.
