The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee who has been appointed to the Pathways Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development.
Duties
Performs selected tasks and phases of routine studies and projects that require application of basicoccupational field theory and principles in the technical area of cybersecurity.
Participates with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects.
Provides assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiatives.
Requirements
- Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
- Must sign a Participant Agreement
- U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
- Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
- You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
- Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
- Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
- Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
- Meet the qualification standards of the position
- Non-citizens may be eligible for employment if Permitted by the DoD Appropriation Act
- May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties.
- This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian
Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
Qualifications
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity, this position may be filled at the, GS-03, GS-04 or GS-05 grade level depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements.
In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Competitive Service Student Trainee Positions.
To qualify for a GS-04: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
To qualify for a GS-05: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.
To qualify for a GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
CLARIFICATION FROM THE AGENCY: Students who have been accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in good academic standing. Good academic standing is determined by the educational institution, but is typically a Grade Point Average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must provide proof of current enrollment in school or documentation indicating acceptance in an accredited educational institution.
Recommend areas of study: Seeking a Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of basic occupational theory, principles, concepts, and practices in the technical area of Information Technology.
2. Skill in applying basic occupational theory, principles, concepts, and practices sufficient to perform student trainee assignments.
3. Ability to follow instructions and guidance to complete assigned tasks and communicate information to others in oral or written format.
4. Ability to analyze problems, identify significant factors, gather and interpret pertinent data, and apply established rules and procedures in order to recommend effective solutions.
5. Ability to learn and apply basic investigative techniques to accomplish work in the subject-matter field.
6. Ability to gather and analyze basic facts, information, and data, and draw conclusions.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
