The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a student trainee (AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE WORKER) who has been appointed to the Pathways Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development. This is a targeted position to theWG-05 level.

Duties

Assists journeyman level mechanic in the area(s) of aircraft, avionics, and/or commodities, by performing the simpler and more routine duties. Under constant close supervision, learns to perform the more advanced work of the electrical worker trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of the trade. Learns to identify, use, and account for all tools and equipment such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, automatic strippers, drills, soldering equipment, heat guns, electric and pneumatic power tools and other specialized tools of the trade. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Maintains Time and Attendance (TAA) procedures in accordance with the Depot Maintenance Accounting and Production system (DMAPS) guidelines. Works to achieve and support quality improvement in all products and services.

  • Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
  • Must sign a Participant Agreement
  • U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
  • Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
  • You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
  • Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
  • Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
  • Meet the qualification standards of the position. This is a temporary Not To Exceed (NTE) one year. This position will be convert to career conditional if successful in program.
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program.
  • Shift work, weekends and irregular hours may be required. May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The work-study schedule for the student will be six months on-the-job training followed by six months academic training.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance. This is Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing.
  • Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in cramped and awkward positions, while installing items, and reaching, lifting, and bending, while using hand and powered tools.
  • Typically works in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area. Work is sometimes in aircraft, in high and restricted places, under conditions of heat and cold and outside in inclement weather.
  • Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lens, eye loops and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components.
  • May be required to climb higher than 12 feet. Subject to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shot machines. Subject to cuts, bruises, shock from electrical or RF energy, eye strain, and burns from soldering devices and hot components.

Qualifications

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity, this position may be filled at the WG-03. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements.
