The Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor is located at the VA Health Care System, New England Health Care Network, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Providence, RI.
Duties

Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Prepares and sets up yoga setting and equipment to support scheduled events and activities.
Instructs Veterans on the safe use of yoga equipment; provides off station yoga activities; ensures the safety of patients during all activities on and off station; uses good judgment and tact when confronted with problems arising between people in the community and any Veteran.
Cultivates a cooperative interrelationship between patients, family members, and VA medical center staff.
Conducts well-being classes, either group or individual, for the purpose of promoting, preserving, or restoring health and well-being.
Provides informal input to the supervisor concerning pertinent topics to meet facility or patient needs.
Coordinates with other staff members concerning the use of the yoga facilities for activities and develops and maintains a calendar of programs and activities.
Develops marketing requests and advertising efforts for special events to encourage participation in yoga programs.
Recommends additions, deletions, or changes to facility rules and operating procedures.
Takes actions consistent with the objectives of the yoga program.
Reviews and recommends changes concerning the effectiveness of ongoing yoga programs from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program objectives.
Works independently when addressing a variety of yoga related administrative problems or situations.
Conducts regular inventories of equipment and supplies.
Turns in items and completes necessary documentation to maintain accountability.
As assigned, the work may include purchasing supplies, equipment, and other materials utilizing prescribed purchasing guidelines and procedures; attends to budgetary matters when needed.
Conducts regular inspections of equipment and initiates and tracks work orders to repair equipment.
Work Schedule: Part-Time; Tuesday and Wednesday; 8:00am-4:30pm and Thursday 8:00am-12:00pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the English Language Proficiency described below:
English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND you must meet one of the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in Federal Service, in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Some examples of qualifying experience include: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.Additional Specialized Experience includespreparing and setting up yoga settings and equipment, leading yoga classes and activities, (Resume(s) must clearly support the duties and experience required for this position. We will not make assumptions regarding experience,planning and carrying out individual and group activities for the rehabilitation of patients with physical and psychiatric conditions, educating patients on the effective use of the equipment to meet their treatment goals, recommending changes or modifications to the treatment plan based on participant response, Monitoring and enforcing safety and infection control standards, carrying out initial first aid response and/or alerting emergency services as needed. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed six (six) months of Graduate education or an internship, in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position, meets the specialized experience required. Education is creditable only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of this Recreation Assistant position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience, as described above, may also be used to qualify for this position.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires standing, walking, squatting, bending, and sitting; changing from one position to the other frequently throughout the day; sitting at a desk and using upper extremities to reach, grasp and place papers, charts, and binders; and reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to fifty (50lbs) pounds. The Recreation Assistant must be able to: pick up, carry, and place folders, charts, books, and binders; set up equipment for patients such as weights or durable medical equipment; lift and carry adaptive equipment weighing up to fifty (50lbs) pounds; push and roll equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, and supply carts; assist patients in mobility such as ambulation and transfers, from minimal assistance to dependent transfers, which may be up to fifty (50lbs) pounds; and perform passive range of motion exercises that require the movement of patients' extremities in all planes of motion. Recreation Assistant requires good manual dexterity to manipulate tools and equipment.
