You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery of NMRTC NEW ENGLAND RI.
Duties
You will perform duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Navy (DON) and Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and the U.S. Code of Federal regulations.
You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
You will maintain, calibrate, and select appropriate equipment and media and conducts or oversees sampling.
You will recommend medical surveillance for employees who are potentially over exposed to hazardous materials, noise, and physical hazards.
You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, when requested.
You will advise management staff and safety office staff on respiratory protection, storage and handling of chemicals, and upon request, performs unscheduled evaluations and accompanies special inspection teams.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- This position is eligible for part time, substantial or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
- In accordance with BUMED INST 6220.9B, this position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations and a signed (Condition of employment) consenting to such.
- A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.
- This position may require exposure to high noise levels.
- Certification in comprehensive practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is highly desired.
Qualifications
GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience in industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices, applicable to planning and carrying out all industrial hygiene programs;
Performing industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations;
Researching chemical and toxicological literature, developing and or recommending methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation;
Presenting oral briefs, and providing detailed written reports of Industrial Hygiene survey findings to include hazards identified, assessments, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.
GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience in industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices, applicable to planning and carrying out all industrial hygiene programs;
Carrying out inspections, handling problems in accordance with office policies, previous training and accepted practices;
Investigating health problems that arise among workers to determine probable cause and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards;
Consulting with supervisor or senior level industrial hygienist on handling complex and unusual problems.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive basic education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.
Basic Requirements:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
- A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
Substitution of Education for Experience:GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree
or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.
