The employee will serve as the Supervisory Histocompatibility Technologist within the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory (HLA) section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Iowa City Veteran's Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) in Iowa City, Iowa.
Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs testing to ensure compatibility, engraftment and monitor rejection which will allow for transplantation for solid organ and bone marrow.
Ensures execution of all program requirements as prescribed by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and/or The Joint Commission, and/or College of American Pathologists (CAP) and/or American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).
Supervises nonsupervisory personnel.
Recommends appointment, plans, and assigns work, provides advice and counsel, and evaluates work of subordinates.
Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance and initiate corrective action.
Develops and updates technical policies and procedure manuals.
Manages document control, develops performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements and is responsible for professional and administrative management of an assigned area to include budget execution.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 pm, rotating on-call

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Requires successful completion of a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a Supervisory Histocompatibility Technologist. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: Education cannot be credited without documentation.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at the least the next lower grade level (GS-11), that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this Supervisory Histocompatibility Technologist. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: serving as a leader performing testing to ensure compatibility, engraftment, and monitor rejection to allow for transplantation of solid organ and bone marrow; and ensuring execution of all program requirements as prescribed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and/or The Joint Commission, and/or College of American Pathologists (CAP), and/or American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). Physical Requirements: The work is moderately sedentary but does require occasional periods of standing and a good deal of walking. The work is performed both in an office setting and a clinical laboratory setting and, therefore, involves regular and recurring exposure to irritant chemicals and infectious materials. Special safety precautions are required, and the incumbent uses personal protective equipment as appropriate and/or required, such as laboratory coat and gloves.
