THIS IS A TITLE 32 DUAL STATUS POSITION DUTY LOCATION: Combined Surface Maintenance Shop (CSMS), Windsor Locks, CT AREA(S) OF CONSIDERATION: Area 1: All currently employed full-time permanent and indefinite personnel of the Connecticut Army National Guard. Area 2: All currently employed full-time temporary technician personnel and all current traditional members of the Connecticut Army National Guard.

Duties

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, and inspections on optical and non-optical precision instruments and related devices. NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard. The major duties include, but are not limited to: Repairs, modifies, overhauls, inspects, troubleshoots, tests, adjusts, and cleans the optics and supporting mechanical and electrical elements of complex panoramic telescopes. Visually inspects optical instrument equipment and operates mechanisms to determine serviceability, damaged or worn parts, and malfunctions. Abides by safety precautions when working with compressors, hoses, and tank testing equipment. Serves as a commodity inspector during technical inspections, Command Maintenance Evaluation Team (COMET) or Maintenance Assistance and (MAIT) Instruction Team. Disassembles equipment; examines for serviceability using precision measuring instruments and special tools; checks lenses and prisms for aberrations; replaces worn or defective parts; reassembles, adjusts, and tests for alignment, collimation, and operations. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. May be required to work in clean room conditions where special clean room garments including head coverings, shoe coverings, and gloves are required. Subject to cuts and bruises, and abrasions from operating hand and power tools. May be occasionally required to perform some tasks outdoors, normally in good weather. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Normally works with small, light items not in excess 10 pounds, but occasionally handles items that weigh up to 40 pounds. Works in a sitting position for extended periods. Occasional assignments involve standing, bending, and stooping in cramped or awkward positions. Close eye and hand coordination is required in fitting and repairing parts.

  • Must meet Compatible Military Assignment within one year from placement.
  • Wear of the military uniform is mandatory.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to apply knowledge of optical theory and construction principles in order to test, repair, align, and collimate a variety of complex optical equipment. Experience which demonstrates the ability to understand and apply instructions, and specifications; and interpret blue prints and diagrams of optical paths and mechanical linkages. Experience using hand and power tools common to an optical shop. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 18 months of specialized experience in the following: Experience or training repairing, rebuilding, overhauling systems and components of optical instrument equipment. Experience in diagnosing malfunction in determining remedy where complex relationships exist among optical systems and supporting mechanical and electrical systems. Experience in the use of a variety of measuring and testing equipment. Experience interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, schematics and work orders. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex optical and fire control instruments; and skill to perform diagnoses, major repair, and maintenance on these devices. Ability and skill to understand and operate a wide variety of test, measurement and diagnostics equipment to perform fault isolation, verify tolerances, make adjustments (e.g. Azimuth test fixtures, collimator fixtures, surface plate, micrometers, dial indicators and depth gages.). Knowledge and understanding of how measurements and tolerances impact on the mechanical, electronic, and electrical systems. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in various operational systems in combat vehicles and artillery pieces when standard procedures and existing methods do not apply. Knowledge of electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards. Ability to utilize and interpret parts list, manufacturer's repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics. COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of Branch/AOC/FA/MOS. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training. MILITARY GRADE (Prior to Application): Enlisted: E-1 through E-7 UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT: Any unit within the state SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a preemployment physical examination prior to appointment.
