The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist to work with the Radiation Therapy Department under the Specialty Service. The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist treats malignant and non-malignant cancers utilizing ionizing radiation. The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist operates ionizing radiation equipment in the Radiation Therapy department as part of therapeutic treatment.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist include but are not limited to the following: - Receives prescriptions and instructions for procedures. Carries out assigned tasks independently, functioning at a more advanced level. Interprets the Radiation Oncologists' radiation prescription as related to the radiation therapy procedure. - Receives assignments of varied complex difficulty that require application of standard procedure or that have special procedures identified and explained. Employee readily understands and carries out these assignments/requests with no interpretation required of the appropriate procedure. - Properly identifies patient per VAHCS policy and radiation therapy procedure prior to performing appropriate radiation therapy procedure. Secures patients' confidence and cooperation by explaining procedures. Technologist positions patients for desired results, and cushions and/or shields patients as appropriate. Assists other technologists with patient care and patient care related tasks. -Maintains appropriate markings on patient's skin or thermoplastic mask to facilitate exact position of treatment. If sub dermal marking(tattoo) is necessary, technologist explains procedure to patient prior to carrying out said procedure. - Limits the radiation treatment field to specific sites utilizing multi-leaf collimators (MLCs) and/or custom 1ead block shielding. Treats patient utilizing equipment, collimators, and wedges to obtain the specific radiation beam as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist. - Operates ionizing radiation therapy equipment to simulate and/or treat patients independently. Determines and sets technical factors in accordance with standardized procedures and techniques. Makes initial determination that treatment is in compliance with prescription. - Performs related clerical duties such as identifying standard data pertinent to the procedure, records data in electronic patient treatment records and work requests. Follows standard operating procedures to perform procedures. Occasionally deviates from standard procedures to adapt for deformities of body, injuries, and other variable considerations such as age and weight of patient. Simulates patient set-ups of varied complexity utilizing CT simulator. Sends CT data promptly to dosimetry planning system. Properly utilizes accessory equipment as needed. Treats patient using electron and/or photon beams. - Observes the radiation therapy course of the patient, including the progression of the disease and patient side effects and/or tissue complications or any other specific medical complaints as conveyed by the patient and reports these to the Radiation Therapy nurse and/or Radiation Oncologist. - Records patient radiation treatments and pertinent treatment related data in electronic patient treatment records. - Sets up radiation therapy treatment or simulation room prior to patient procedure. Assures that related patient supplies are present and well-stocked in room. - Schedules patients in ARIA for simulation and radiation therapy appointments. Maintains simulation and treatment logs of patients and procedures used. - Manufactures immobilizing and shielding devices as needed for patients to receive maximum benefits from radiation treatments and minimal radiation exposure to normal tissues. - Performs routine port filming of patient treatment areas per department policy, utilizing virtual filming methods and equipment. - Follows and trains other staff on all manufacturer instructions and local established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for medical supply/equipment decontamination, reprocessing, packaging, and sterilization functions. - Serves as a leader in the Radiation Oncology clinic. Upholds professional standards, models professional behavior, demonstrates exemplary technical skills with a high level of attention to detail and thorough knowledge of service policies and procedures. - Complies with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations; using protective equipment when require and provided. Promptly reports all accidents and notifies supervisor of unsafe/unhealthful, conditions in the workplace. Attends scheduled training sessions and participates in facility or service level safety promotions Work Schedule: Full-time. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a program in therapeutic radiologic technology, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's or higher degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or other accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the subsequent completion of a 12-month ED accrediting body-approved program in therapeutic radiologic technology. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 C.F.R. Part 75. They must have successfully completed an educational program meeting or exceeding the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the ED, and be radiation therapists certified by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T). Certification. All applicants must be certified in therapeutic radiologic technology by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (ARRT (T)). Grade Determinations: Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist, GS-6 Experience: None above the basic requirements. Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist, GS-7 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled; AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all the KSAs below: 1. Knowledge to set-up the treatment room to deliver basic and some complex radiation treatments on a linear accelerator, as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. 2. Knowledge of machine warm up procedures for interpreting output levels compared with established thresholds and radiation safety principles. 3. Ability to perform patient chart reviews using an electronic medical record and using the Record and Verify System or other similar treatment delivery systems. 4. Knowledge of operating computed tomography (CT) Simulator to preform simulations that is demonstrated by following directives, designing custom immobilization for reproducible set-ups, obtaining optimal imaging, and completing accurate and precise patient documentation. 5. Skill in communicating all aspects of patient care with the radiation oncology team. 6. Knowledge of utilizing an on-board imaging system (i.e., Linac's or comparable system) to interpret the images. 7. Skill in performing radiation safety practices including when to report discrepancies and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, accrediting agencies, policies and department standard operating procedures. Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist, GS-8 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities/core competencies described at that level. AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all the KSAs below: 1. Skill in setting up the treatment room to deliver basic and some complex radiation treatments on a linear accelerator, as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. 2. Ability to perform machine warm up procedures and interpret output levels compared with established thresholds and radiation safety principles. 3. Ability to perform moderately complex patient chart reviews by using the electronic medical record and the Record and Verify System or other similar treatment delivery systems. 4. Ability to operate the CT Simulator to perform simulations, design custom immobilization for reproducible set-ups, obtain optimal imaging and provide accurate and precise patient documentation. Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled. AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all the KSAs below: 1. Skill in independently setting up the patient in preparation for basic and complex radiation treatments on a linear accelerator, as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. 2. Skill in independently performing machine warm-up procedures to interpret output levels compared with established thresholds adhering to the principles of radiation safety and all aspects of quality assurance. 3. Skill to independently perform patient chart reviews and effectively document records utilizing an electronic medical records system and the Record and Verify System or other similar treatment delivery systems. Preferred Experience: Minimum of 6 months experience. References: VA Handbook 5005_137 Appendix G26 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-6 to GS-9.
