You will serve as a BRAKER-SWITCHER in the Railroad Operation Division NMCLANT Detachment Earle of NAVY MUNITIONS COMMAND.
This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
Duties
You will assist with receiving and relaying hand signals for train movement, coupling and uncoupling cars, throwing switches to shunt cars and/or locomotives into different tracks for spotting or making up trains.
You will assist with setting brakes, placing blocks against wheels on spotted rail cars, stopping motor vehicle traffic at crossings, and flagging train across.
You will follow standard safety, signaling and train movement procedures.
You will assist with inspections of flat car decking for unsafe conditions.
You will watch over assigned area(s) and equipment, and check continually for operating hazards, malfunctioning or defective equipment.
Requirements

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or Secret final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- The incumbent will be frequently exposed to conditions such as: loud noise from operating trains, train whistles, horns, fumes and odors such as diesel exhaust and creosote.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Braker-Switcher, WG-5736-05/07 without more than normal supervision such as:
Performs braking and switching duties, involving receiving and relaying hand signals for train movements.
Couple and uncouple railcars, throw switches to shunt railcars and/or locomotives.
Checks railcar numbers and railcar seals to determine status of railcars on tracks.
Maintains constant check for variety of common track and train operating conditions which cause train breakdown, derailment, damage to cargo, operating failure which could lead to other accidents.
Informs the Conductor and Locomotive Engineer through signals or other means to resolve track obstructions, track defects, train derailment, malfunctioning or defective equipment.
