Duties

This position serves as a Student Trainee (Civil Engineering) for the Canyon Country District. Carries out various duties in order to learn different responsibilities related to Civil Engineering. Follows standard procedures while performing a variety of Civil Engineering assignments. Uses standard formulas in order to make accurate measurements. Uses multiple electronic devices to enter and retrieve information from databases, produce graphics and simple maps, and create spreadsheets. Assists in creating drawing and cost estimates for engineering related contracts. Reports errors and inconsistencies in technical data. Conducts simple site surveys.

Requirements

  • The entire period served as a Career/Indefinite Intern counts as the appointee's trial period. Prior Federal civilian service is credited toward the completion of the required trial period in the same manner as prescribed in 5 CFR 315.802.
  • Must sign a Participant Agreement that sets forth the expectations for the internship.
  • Must maintain a cumulative and term grade point average of 2.5 or higher throughout internship.
  • Must be enrolled in classes a minimum of half time for the duration of the internship (include class schedule for Spring 2023 with application).
  • MUST PROVIDE all transcripts/proof of enrollment/acceptance, and/or current class schedule.
  • Students who have graduated are not eligible for this position.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must: Internship Program Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position AND Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school AND Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher AND You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. In addition to the basic requirement, to qualify at the GS-04 level you must meet the following: Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed two (2) academic years (60 semester hours) of education above high school or associate's degree in a related field of study. In addition to the basic requirement, to qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed four (4) academic years (120 semester hours) of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study. CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must: Be a U.S. Citizen Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program Complete their degree or certificate requirements Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement Perform their job successfully CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment. Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Field work requires regular and recurring periods of physical exertion including walking, bending, climbing, crouching, or stooping over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain. Field work may require sufficient physical strength to use manual hand tools. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and other items that weigh up to 50 pounds. Office work is primarily sedentary. Work Environment: Field work is typically performed in an outdoor setting and therefore subject to the risks and discomforts arising from remoteness (e.g., distance from services such as medical offices, lack of cell phone coverage), weather (e.g., extreme temperatures and precipitation), wildlife (e.g., bites and stings), and diverse terrain (e.g., steep, rocky, or unstable footing). Implementation of standard field-going precautions such as planning (e.g., checking the weather and sharing travel details with the supervisor or higher-graded employee), situational awareness, and proper personal protective equipment (e.g., sun protection, field clothing, gloves, sturdy footwear, a basic first aid kit) are sufficient to mitigate most risks. Accessing field sites often requires the use of two- or four-wheel drive vehicles and comes with the risk of vehicular accidents and the duty to observe closures, fire restrictions, and traffic regulations. Safety instructions and risk management protocols are communicated by the supervisor prior to initiating field work. Individuals driving a government vehicle are required to complete a Defensive Driving Course. Office work is performed in a work environment that involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of offices (e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, participation in fire and other safety drills, etc.). The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
