This position is in the Sciences and Engineering Division, Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS) of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) of the Department of Transportation (DOT). If selected you will perform professional tasks directed toward the evaluation of the hazards of hazardous materials transport and the development of Federal policy and regulations for domestic and international transportation of hazardous materials by highway, air, rail, and water

Qualifications

Experience in applying concepts, principles, and practices from the field of chemistry. Experience with research and review of technical material to compile specific information on chemical and physical hazards of materials. To qualify on Education, you must have: • 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR master's or equivalent graduate degree.• Master’s degree or higher needs to be in Chemistry or a closely related field. You can also qualify based on a combination of education and experience. RECENT GRADUATE PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: *Applicants must have obtained a qualifying associates, bachelors, master's, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution, within the previous 2 years unless military service interfered with a veterans eligibility to apply during that two year time frame. Veterans meeting the above exclusion may apply within 2 years of discharge or 6 years from the date of receipt of the degree whichever comes first. EDUCATION INFORMATION:

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


College or university education -- Educational course work may be at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Successful completion of graduate level courses will be accepted as evidence that an applicant also possesses the knowledge taught in courses at lower levels in the same field.
