This position is located in the Optical Fabrication Laboratory (OFL) at VA Boise Healthcare System - Boise VA Medical Center in Boise, ID. The Prescription Eyeglass Maker performs the moderate duties involved in the optical fabrication manufacturing process as well as assist the Prescription Eyeglass Maker Supervisor in maintaining the optical fabrication equipment.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Manufacturing ophthalmic prescription eyeglasses with moderate assistance and performing quality control at each station
Following the set pace and demonstrates proper work methods from the onset of getting a blank lens to the final finished eyeglasses
Following the instructions received from the Prescription Eyeglass Maker Supervisor for area assignment in the OFL
Performing the required assignment tasks to produce prescription eyeglasses and assuring that daily operational supplies are readily available
Operating all machinery and equipment involved in eyeglass production safely including proper and regular training in safety procedures and proper operation of the optical equipment
Maintaining open and ongoing communication concerning the status and operations of the optical fabrication equipment with the Prescription Eyeglass Maker Supervisor
Following maintenance guidelines from Prescription Eyeglass Maker Supervisor and Manufacture specifications of assigned optical fabrication equipment
Following processes and procedures for the efficient operation of the optical laboratory fabrication equipment and assuring that maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with local, network and national VA policies
Following safety and housekeeping rules and ensures that assigned area of the OFL is properly cleaned and maintained daily
Assuring compliance with regulations and operating standards per equipment manufacturer recommendations
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including occasionally lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work includes periods of standing for long periods on concrete floors, stooping, crouching, bending, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, and walking for up to ten (10) hours in each day. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent is standing or walking most of the time. The position requires manual dexterity. Incumbent must have the ability to maintain a high degree of mental alertness and concentration for up to ten hours at a time. Uncommon tours and/or work schedules may be required.
WORK CONDITIONS: The work is performed inside in a clean and air-conditioned office setting and in a semi-clean manufacturing area. The incumbent is subject to lens dust, lens polish, equipment wastewater, chemicals used in the production of ophthalmic glasses, and the noise of the fabrication machinery. The office setting involves the everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting rooms, using safe working practices with office equipment, avoiding trips or falls, observing fire regulations, etc. The manufacturing setting requires attention to safety and emergency procedures in the case of injury or exposure to personnel. This includes assuring staff are educated and trained in proper operation of machinery and what to do in the event of an injury or emergency. This setting also requires the same basic safety elements found in an office setting as listed above.
