This position is organizationally aligned under the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Facilities Management Services Line Facilities Service Line, at the Tomah VA Medical Center, Tomah, WI. The primary purpose of the position involves construction, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, able to troubleshoot and repair interior and exterior surface and structures made of limestone, brick, stone, and concrete throughout the VAMC Tomah campus.
Duties
Major duties:
Responsible for performing a variety of complex masonry duties involved with maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of interior and exterior surface and/or structures, such as archways and limestone ribbons alongside buildings and windowsills, made of limestone, brick, brick work, block, stone, concrete walkways and pads, and similar materials.
Computes the number of layers of brick or block, etc., and the corresponding thickness of mortar joints and must be able to cut,
shape and set the masonry products for strength and appearance, keeping a constant check for uniform arrangement of materials and workmanship, using plumb, bob, level, and straight edge, etc., to obtain desired results for decorative brick work.
Operates jack hammers for brick/concrete removal and uses tow mixers; one for concrete and one for mortar.
Independently completes form work for concrete.
Repairing stacks and chimneys as needed.
Required to perform periodic inspections on interior and exterior surfaces of various buildings.
Performs a variety of plastering work tasks in accordance with FPM supplement 512-1 Job Grading System, Part I, Section III, for occupational Code 3604 on an as needed basis involving the application of structural and glazed or unglazed ceramic tile to wall and floor surfaces.
Constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural
soundness.
Lay out the work, determine material and equipment needs, and plans and accomplish a wide range of work sequences ranging from basic repairs to complex project segments with minimal supervision or review of work in progress.
Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Efforts
Work assignments require high physical effort. The employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 41 kilograms (90 pounds) in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. They are continually required to stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping is required. Routine climbing and work in high places on ladders and roof tops are required.
Working Conditions
The position works indoors and outdoors and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards attributed to this trade. Incumbent may be exposed to toxic fumes, gases, and airborne particles in the performance of duties. This exposure may adversely affect pulmonary function. The wearing of a protective respirator that will reduce the possibility of pulmonary damage is mandatory when working in areas where toxic exposure is a possibility. OSHA requirements mandate that employees required to use a respirator not have a beard and pass a baseline pulmonary function test prior to the use of a respirator. Occasionally, maybe required to work outdoors in inclement weather. Position is required to dress appropriately to the task assigned using
government furnished uniforms and clothing. Position will be required to wear any PPE required for the work to be accomplished.
Work may require long hours and overtime when necessary.
