This position is located at the US Coast Guard, Academy, Facilities Engineering Division, Public Works Branch, New London, CT.

Duties

This position is located in the Plumbing and Heating Shop of the Public Works Branch and is responsible for preventative, emergency, and routine service work as a Maintenance Mechanic in refrigeration, heating ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing trades throughout the grounds. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:* Logging expenditures of time and materials; and scheduling, accomplishing, and recording completion of work tasks.* Following established preventative maintenance schedules and manufactures maintenance instructions.* Repairing and maintaining large air conditioning systems that performs a variety of functions including heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating.* Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.* Maintaining, repairing, and installing as necessary water distribution systems and components.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:- Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT)- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.- Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)- Use of measuring instruments- Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment- Knowledge of materialsNational Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement. If you are including education on your resume, report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
