The position of Maintenance Supervisor is located in the Maintenance & Repair Section of the Engineering Service at VA Palo alto Health Care System. The incumbent serves as foreman over the Carpenter/Paint shop exercising full supervisory for control over work operators involving five to ten subordinate workers. The incumbent may be stationed at any of the sites within the Palo alto Health Care System.
Duties
Plans directs, lays out, assigns, coordinates, and supervises work performed by WG-9 Carpenters and Painters and WG 10 Maintenance Mechanics.
Responsible for inspecting and repairing the carpentry related functions.
Must attend foreman meetings and meetings with the Chief Engineering Service and report the information received at those meetings to the shop staff.
Consults with and advises Service Chiefs regarding installation, operation, maintenance, o repair of systems and equipment.
Supervise minor improvement type Jobs that require direction liaison between shops or other hospital activities.
Ability to read blueprint and schematic, measuring, calibrating and estimating.
Knowledge of hand tools, and stationary power tools.
Must be competent in reading drawings and overcoming the difficulties encountered within applying the drawing to the job site.
Order all material to complete minor construction projects.
Plans and schedules work assignments.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent may be required to make modification and installation in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet; manholes of 30 feet deep, and occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. Incumbent are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises and occasionally work in areas requiring the use of respirators. Must have a rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Construction Team usually perform work inside well lighted, ventilated, and heated areas. Floors are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Occasionally, work is performed in all types of weather. Construction Team are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises. They frequently climb ladders and work from high places. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered.
