This position is an outpatient provider within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services (PM&RS) Program at Butler VA Health Care. The incumbent provides these evaluations and clinical rehabilitation services within all settings of the Butler VA Health Care System to include the Health Care Center (HCC), Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (DRRTP), Community Living Center (CLC), and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC)

Duties

Work Schedule: Major duties include: Demonstrates a full professional understanding of occupational therapy (OT) principles and techniques consistent with current clinical standards based on OT theory and evidence-based practice. His/her practice is inclusive of physical, occupational, cognitive and psychosocial functional deficits. Uses critical analysis, clinical reasoning, and creativity to independently solve complex problems which may require adapting and modifying assessments, treatment plans, activities, and procedures to meet the needs of patients. Evaluates patient's needs for complex power mobility devices and custom manual wheelchairs, to include specialized seating needs as well as contraindications. The incumbent takes into consideration the patient's pertinent healthcare factors, including but not limited to, diagnosis, functional status, skin integrity, height, and weight, as well as psychosocial factors, such as living environment, mode of transportation, lifestyle, culture, and work history. Assesses patient's clinical eligibility for a power mobility device, custom manual wheelchair and specialty patient lifts, and orders specially customized equipment to meet each patient's specific needs and to maximize independence, while guarding against fraud, waste, and abuse. Implements an assistive technology, wheelchair, and/or occupational therapy treatment plan to meet individual rehabilitation objectives utilizing functional activities which have as their goal the improvement of the patient's activities of daily living (ADL), strength, range of motion, sensation, perceptive and/or cognitive process. Treatment plan may include therapeutic exercise, muscle reeducation, neuromuscular facilitation, perceptual motor integration, fabrication, and application of devices for daily living, teaching adaptive or compensatory techniques for community access and work activities, and providing patient and caregiver education regarding disability. Assists patient in solving problems associated with their environment. Works with vendors and manufacturers to obtain quotes and manages inquiries required to complete the order. Submits quotes and enters prosthetics orders for purchase, and subsequently manages the order through to the final fitting and scheduling of issuance to the patient. Completes specialized evaluations for automobile adaptations, incorporating the vehicle's make, model, age, and frame as well as the Veteran's functional limitations and needs. Recommends vehicle modifications or adaptive devices intended to maintain the patient's independence and capacity to drive safely. Generates fiscally responsible purchases that are compliant with local, VISN and federal purchasing and contracting regulations as well as accepted business practice guidelines. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-13 Preferred Experience: Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level that is directly related to the position to be filled such as provides advanced outpatient assessment and treatment for Veterans with various physical dysfunction who need a wheelchair and/or other assistive technologies, provides these evaluations and clinical rehabilitation services; types of disorders treated may include, but are not limited to, neuromuscular; musculoskeletal; orthopedic; amputation; cardiovascular; pulmonary; diabetes; neuro-psychiatric; neurological disorders, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Parkinsonism; alcohol and substance abuse; and other post-surgical, acute and chronic disabling conditions associated with adult/geriatric patients and rehabilitation, and Utilize wheeled mobility and assistive technology.
