Duties

You will serve as a crewmember protecting life and property. Respond to automatic fire alarms, natural gas leaks, wildland fires and fights fire. Firefighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment, and facilities; crashed and burning aircraft; and fuel, chemical, and brush fires. Perform fire protection inspections in areas where no unusual fire hazards are expected and the potential severity is low. Perform maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency, and stand by duties. Operate radios, fire reporting systems (Emergency Reporting), and computer modem for hazardous material information and performs maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities. First responder to medical emergencies and performs emergency medical procedures. The employee performs initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination; determines priority of patient care based on assessment findings; takes, records, and monitors patients baseline vital signs.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. or more in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer. Employee must remain clean-shaven to ensure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • This position requires working a 72-hour weekly/144-hour pay period tour of duty.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Position includes a continuing requirement to satisfy job-oriented training.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain current Emergency Medical Technician certification commensurate with the level of their duties within 12 months of appointment.
  • This position is covered as a rigorous/primary position. Maximum 37 years of age entry restriction.
  • During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current, valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
  • Duties require full use of both arms, both legs, and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb for such tasks as use of aerial ladders, firefighting equipment controls, etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: GS-04 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; AND (2) Rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-05 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. GS-06 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; AND (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents (GS-05). GS-07 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; AND (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Required Certifications: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable commensurate with the level of their duties. GS-04: Applicants must be certified as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations. Applicant must obtain Airport Firefighter (ARFF) within 12 months of hire. GS-05: Applicants must be Certified as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations. The applicant must maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card. GS-06: In addition to the GS-05 level requirements, must be certified as a Driver/Operator ARFF and Driver/Operator Pumper. The applicant must maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card. Applicant must obtain NWCG Firefighter Type II (S-130/190) within 12 Months of hire. GS-07: In addition to the GS-06 level requirements, must be certified as a Driver/Operator Aerial and Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply (MWS). The applicant must maintain a current National Registry (NREMT) and/or valid state Emergency Medical Technician Certification and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card. Applicant must obtain NWCG Firefighter Type II (S-130/190) within 12 Months of hire.
