This position is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, in the Interpretation, Education, and Partnerships Division.

Duties

Major Duties: The incumbent will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, presenting, and evaluating formal, curriculum based educational activities to support the visitors and communities vested in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA) and Rainbow Bridge National Monument (RABR). This position coordinates outreach activities requiring the incumbent to coordinate booths, speakers, and/or activities for special events in the park's various gateway communities. Operations are primarily based out of Page, Arizona, but occasional overnight and backcountry travel is required. Specific duties include planning and advocating for the parks' education and outreach programs and coordinating with other park staff members and community members to provide robust education and outreach programming. You will be responsible for ensuring that the park's education and outreach programs meet NPS standards for quality and professionalism, advertises and delivers community programs, focuses the parks' efforts on underserved populations, develops and maintains partnerships with persons and organizations inside and outside of the park, and manages the parks' education and outreach budgets and projects. Physical Demands: The work requires a mix of office duty and presenting education programs in classrooms and the park. This could mean long periods of standing and walking around the park in all weather conditions. It could also include management of and presentations of school groups that may exceed 100 students. Valid driver's license is required, as travel could require use of park vehicles. The work can be stressful due to occasionally high numbers of students, complex staffing arrangements, and logistical complexities. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Programs are conducted in all seasons of the year and in a large range of weather and environmental conditions. Office work is typically sedentary, involving sitting and using a computer in an office environment. Other work may be in classrooms. Area and Housing Information: This position is in Page, Arizona at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the Arizona-Utah border. Page overlooks beautiful Lake Powell which offers a variety of water sports including boating, fishing, and river running on the Colorado River above and below Lake Powell. The surrounding land is beautiful red rock country perfect for hiking, hunting, and backcountry activities. Page is at the hub of the Grand Circle which contains America's largest concentration of national parks and monuments, such as, Grand Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and the Flagstaff Area Monuments. Page offers normal small community amenities such as an airport, shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12, and college courses available through the local Community College. The elevation is 4300 feet with high-desert sunny days, cool nights, and low humidity. Home purchases are available in the area. Government housing may be available by a bid process.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/17/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Series 1701 Individual Occupational Basic Requirements: Completed a bachelor's or higher degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to this position. -OR- Completed a combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. Minimum Qualifications: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience could include teacher; park ranger, park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to education, protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; community engagement, communications, or public affairs; developing long range interpretive program plans; developing and training others on educational programs; or other similar work. You must include hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following fields: education, communication, natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (Two years of graduate education is 36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Successful completion of courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 27 semester hours (or 41 quarter hours) of directly related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). You must include hours worked per week and transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
