Duties

You will perform inspections to detect and initiate action to eliminate hazards which would lead to an outbreat of fire. You will perform weekly inspections of subs and ships in the shipyard and inspect nuclear areas and ships for containment of hazardous spills. You will evaluate code complaince for complex industrial processes, operations, and storage to assure that all are maintained in accordance with applicable regulations, noting violations and communicating according to shipyard policy. You will review plans for new constructions and alterations or extensions of existing structures to recommend changes and additions to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations. You will provide technical assistance to department heads by preparing written correspondence to communicate fire protection and prevention practices.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to maintain a current Radiological Worker qualification.

Qualifications

GS-08: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Interpreting and applying applicable codes to detect and eliminate fire & life safety hazards; 2) Selecting the applicable code or standard relevant to particular types of facilities and hazards, type of construction and other variables; 3) Analyzing and interpreting codes and standards to make compliance determinations; 4) Communicating orally and publicly in order to provide fire and life safety training and events, as well as writing reports, case notes, briefings, instructions and regulations, and various other written correspondence; and 5) Instructing in a classroom setting using methods and techniques to educate children about fire safety. GS-07: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting in organization and implementation of fire safety education programs for base personnel; 2) Demonstrating knowledge of hazardous materials, and containment of spills; 3) Inspecting and testing a variety of fire extinguishing and reporting systems with some guidance; and 4) Preparing written inspection reports and violation notices for review. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (GS-08): For the GS-08 level, you must possess the following certifications: Fire Inspector I and II; Fire Instructor I; and HAZMAT Awareness. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. (NOTE: You must attach copies of all certifications or you will be rated ineligible.)
