You will serve as a Rigger Leader (Expert) in the DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY. You will serve as an Expert Rigger leading a group to ensure work assignments are completed. This position is located in Shop 72. Applicants will only be considered for positions within their own UIC. For example: If you are within UIC 4523A, you will only be considered for positions within 4523A.

Duties

You will lead, train and mentor shop personnel in estimating weight and center of gravity of loads to be moved, planning weight distribution and load maneuvering, bracing, cushioning, and preparing the load and attaching appropriate lifting gear. You will explain work requirements, methods, and procedures, instruct mechanics on new procedures and provide advice when problems arise. You will be responsible for planning, arranging and executing proper and safe operations, ensuring that materials, tools, and component parts are appropriate for the work to be performed. You will accomplish routine inspection of work in process and ensure work is completed in accordance with standards and specifications. You will monitor lifting and handling operations ensuring it is completed in accordance with schematic drawings, operations manuals, and manufacturer specifications. You will oversee adjustments and repairs to maintain the operation of lifting and handling equipment, determine cause of malfunction or defects, and repair or replace worn, damaged, or defective parts. You will fabricate, install and repair standing and running rigging and wire cable or fiber rope articles, such as slings, towing bridles, nets, rope, ladders, and other ship and boat rigging and weight handling gear.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination and complete annual physicals examinations.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • Work is performed in shops and aboard ships and submarines which requires working from uncomfortable and cramped positions which involve stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching and climbing ladders.
  • This position requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
