Announcing a vacancy for an experienced echocardiography technician with strong interpersonal skills will be responsible for obtaining comprehensive transthoracic echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms at the Manhattan Campus of the NY Harbor VA Healthcare System.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Patient Care:
1. Perform 2-D Echocardiographic imaging, M-Mode tracing, derived from the 2D image, continuous wave and pulsed wave Doppler flow velocity recordings, color flow Doppler imaging; 3-D imaging; tissue Doppler; resynchronization analysis.
2. Perform stress echocardiography which involves evaluation of patients with
ischemic heart disease and a thorough understanding of wall motion abnormalities and the corresponding coronary artery perfusion regions.
a. pharmacologic stress agents and the performance of exercise or additional methods that expand the diagnostic capability of echocardiography
b. use of contrast agents may be incorporated into any of the imaging modalities
3. Assist physician in performing invasive trans-esophageal echocardiography which may include facilitating cardiac surgeons in operating room setting
4. Capture and store digital images, analyzing digital findings to obtain optimal resolution.
5. Makes high quality echo recordings for interpretation by physicians of the cardiology section.
6. Performs emergency echocardiograms in the Intensive Care Unit, Catheterization Lab and the Emergency Room.
7. Accurately measures recordings and compiles patient echocardiograph data for report generation.
8. Efficiently schedules inpatient and outpatient appointments so as to minimize delays and backlogs, giving priority to more urgent studies.
9. Completes inpatient and outpatient consults within the time frames designated by the cardiac section and institution policies.
10. Maintains accurate and up to date files of all studies performed and assists in the maintenance of an efficient filing system.
11. Completes all encounter forms and any other documentation required by cardiology or institutional policy for both inpatient and outpatient studies in a timely manner.
12. Enters all echo reports in patient records in the computer in a timely fashion.
13. Performs routine daily cleaning and preventive maintenance on all apparatus used for echocardiography and promptly reports any malfunctions or deficiencies.
14. Ensures timely ordering of expendable supplies needed for echocardiography.
15. Routinely records transthoracic echos, Stress Echos, TEEs, using echo contrast and/or agitated saline (i.e. "bubble") injections when requested.
16. Maintains prompt and appropriate communication with the cardiac section including fellow technicians, physicians, NPs/PAs, administrative assistants.
17. Communicates with medical providers, administrators and/or patients to matters pertaining to the echo lab.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible
to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be
substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it
is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and
abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations".
English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and
written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography)
GS-10. In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-9 level, positions at this grade may be
supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly
related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at
this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment.
1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and
techniques.
*2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination
program.
*3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
*4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls,
contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
*5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include
responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and
recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered
Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support
(BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must
consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the
incumbent at least 25% of the time.
