This position serves as a Supervisory Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist member of the radiation oncology team working collaboratively with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist meeting cancer patients needs through radiation therapy.

Major Duties in include but not limited to: Respnsible for the administrative supervision of all therapists. Directs the technical operations, makes decisions concerning appointments, promotions, technical and status changes, and recognition of various performance levels. Interviews and selects or assists with the selection of vacant positions within the department. Coordinates or assists with the training and orientation of all new staff to the department. Maintains and coordinates all staffing contracts within the department. Respnsible for performance appraisals and competency of TRTs as well as initiating disciplinary action as appropriate. Primary responsibility for staff schedules, call schedules, student rotations, and patient scheduling. Serves as liaison for radiation therapy student programs and coordinates student activities in the service. Works collaboratively with labor partners and supports EEO standards and principles. Receives patients and briefly explains methods of procedure to the patient. Performs CT simulations using approved protocols and imaging techniques and fabricates custom devices. Observes the patient's progress throughout the treatment and inform the Radiation Oncologist should any clinically significant change occur. Independently performs warm-up checks of each radiation therapy machine to assist the Radiation Physicist in the identification and correction of machine malfunctions. Sets up the patient in the proper positioning and delivers radiation therapy utilizing the linear accelerators. Records all parameters involved with each patient, including daily and accumulated doses, treatment time, field size, and type of radiation used. Performs all duties of the TRTs in case of absence to assure the daily scheduled workload is completed. Respnsible for the coordination and development of the Quality Improvement program monitors. This includes supervision and training of therapists in this activity. Respnsible for developing and preparing budget estimates based on experience and anticipated workload and costs; determining the materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to function effectively; assisting with the development and implementation of service goals, research, and preparation of all related reports. Investigates new equipment options and plans for a long-term replacement. Therapy. The incumbent must be board certified and registered by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiation Technology). The Radiation Therapist must complete 24 hours of appropriate continuing education every two years to remain ARRT certified. This requirement maintains expertise, awareness of changes, and advances in the field. In-depth knwledge of anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and functioning of the major and minor systems susceptible to ionizing radiation, and knowledge of changes to systems and organs caused by a wide variety of medical and surgical diseases. Knowledge of complex radiographic exposure techniques such as determination of technical factors and machine geometry of linear topographic X-ray machines or equipment of similar complexity, calculation of critical technical factors needed to show the difference between organs, glands, etc. of similar density when contrast material cannot be used. Skill to apply such knowledge to perform initial simulation and to direct the radiologist's attention to issues related to either the patient's condition or the radiographic technique required to produce the study. Explains the validity of the radiographic results given the conditions and extenuating circumstances in which the study was produced. Knowledge of radiographic positioning is required in complex procedures. Knowledge of first aid and nursing practices T assure adequate safeguards are maintained for the safety of the patient and the operator, a thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, including concepts of cumulative dosage, genetic changes, and effects of radiation in living organisms is required. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 15 days of the closing date of this announcement, 10/10/2023. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a program in therapeutic radiologic technology, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's or higher degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or other accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the subsequent completion of a 12-month ED accrediting body-approved program in therapeutic radiologic technology. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 C.F.R. Part 75. They must have successfully completed an educational program meeting or exceeding the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the ED, and be radiation therapists certified by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T). Certification: All applicants must be certified in therapeutic radiologic technology by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (ARRT (T)). Exception: Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for TRT certification may be given a temporary appointment under 38 U.S.C. 7405 (a)(1)(B) for up to one year at the entry level only as a graduate TRT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 (c)(2)(B). Graduate TRTs may only be appointed at the entry grade level and may not be promoted/converted until certification is obtained. Temporary graduate TRT appointments may not be extended beyond one year or converted to a new temporary appointment. Failure to Obtain Certification: In all cases, TRTs must actively pursue meeting the requirements for certification starting from the date of their appointment. Failure to become certified within one year from the date of appointment will result in removal from the GS-0648 TRT series and may result in termination of employment. Loss of Certification: Once certified, a TRT who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment. Grandfathering Provision: Employees in an occupation requiring a licensure/certification/registration, may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance level, or demoted within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the full performance level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. At the advanced level, Medical Dosimetrists are fully functional dosimetrist with the knowledge and experience applying an advanced level of treatment planning and dosimetry procedures. Medical Dosimetrists serve as an integral team member for complex treatment planning, QA verifications, weekly chart checks and ability to train on all aspects of the Record and Verify system. Medical Dosimetrists train staff, evaluate workload and ensure compliance with all necessary governing bodies and standard operation procedures. AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: You must also demonstrate the following KSAs: KSAs Skill in independently performing machine warm up procedures and interpreting output levels compared with established thresholds adhering to the principles of radiation safety and all aspects of quality assurance. Ability to independently perform patient chart reviews using an electronic medical record and the Record and Verify System or other similar treatment delivery systems. Ability to independently perform all basic and complex CT simulations, including independently operating the CT equipment, following directives, designing custom immobilization for reproducible set-ups, obtaining optimal imaging, completing accurate data transfer for treatment planning and providing accurate and precise patient documentation. Ability to utilize a Linac's On Board Imaging system to interpret complex images. Preferred Experience: At least 2 years.
