The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Asheville VA Medical Center (VAMC). The incumbent is a staff member of the Veterans Transportation Section, serves in the capacity of Motor Vehicle Operator Work Leader and transporting the Medical Center patients, supplies, materials, mail, etc.

Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Motor Vehicle Operating
Operates diesel, electric and gasoline-powered vehicles with gross vehicle weight of up to and including 26,001 pounds. These vehicles can carry loads weighing up to and including one ton. Included are vehicles such as the 16- passenger bus, vans, trucks, automobiles. Vehicle specially equipped with stretcher and (non-emergency) medical equipment or may be equipped with special purpose powered equipment such as a wheelchair lifts or lift gates.
Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and emergency repairs to motor vehicles.
Operate vehicles transporting government personnel, patients, material and supplies to Asheville VAMC properties, Asheville VAMC sites of care, Asheville VAMC offsite administrative offices, over local, state, and interstate roads.
Leader Duties
Provide guidance to the (5) motor vehicle operators (MVO) to assure that activities that activities are being performed in accordance with established procedures. Ensures work assignments of the team are carried out by performing a range of duties such as:
Assesses daily workload and leads in performing required tasks; individuals must do a walk around of each vehicle on a daily basis.
Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization and assures completion and timeliness of the work.
Provides on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices, and other VA/VHA and General Services Administration (GSA) rules, regulations, and tracking compliances regarding MVOs.
Reviews work in progress and completed work for compliance and timeliness, based on the supervisor's workload objectives.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The daily duties performed by the incumbent consist of climbing in and out of vehicles, and the ability to maneuver longer and heavier vehicles such as patient vehicles. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required of handling objects weighting up to and over 50 pounds especially when loading and unloading patients. Incumbent must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception. Incumbent must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Incumbent must be able to pass annual VA medical exams.
