This position is located in the Agricultural Research Services (ARS), Field Organization, Appalachian Fruit Research Station, in Kearneysville, WV. In this position, you will install, maintain, and repair HVAC, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration systems.

Duties

Maintain shop and storage areas and equipment (air compressor) operational, including ventilation and dust control systems. Perform miscellaneous maintenance and repair duties that relate to facility or building repair, i.e., painting, roofing, minor cement repairs, office renovation, and move equipment, furniture, stored material. Ability to read and interpret repair and maintenance manuals and schematic drawings. Use power and hand tools and is responsible for their maintenance and proper use. Periodic security and operational checks to ensure that the alarm response system for equipment breakdowns is working properly.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain West Virginia Class I Potable Water Certification, CFC Refrigeration Certification, and Contract Officer Representative (COR) Certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Serves as an exigency employee with responsibility to work during hazardous weather and/or emergency situations such as power outages.
  • Must be able to report to work for emergency call back situations.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Time in grade: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade (e.g. one year at the GS-11 grade level for consideration for the GS-12 grade level.). In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 10/13/2023 Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort: Active muscular effort is required, especially when working in cramped positions, lifting heavy appliances and using hand tools required to perform the various duties of this position. The incumbent works from ladders and platforms to contact hard-to-reach places; and is required to lift up to 50 pounds; and crawl, bend, stoop, and walk in limited space areas. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various climatic conditions. Incumbent is subject to noxious fumes when welding; burns and shocks when working on electrical equipment; cuts, bruises and strains when engaged in the various trades and activities; and lab areas with different chemicals. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
