About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
As the Modern War Institute (MWI) Deputy Editorial Director, the selected applicant will work with MWI’s Editorial Director and will be responsible for a full range of editorial responsibilities associated with managing a digital publication.
You will solicit written content from contributors that will advance discussion and debates surrounding topics related broadly to the subject of modern war.
Edit content and work with contributors to maximize the content’s impact.
Design digital media that helps distribute the intellectual capital developed by the center to practitioners and academics.
Maintain a well-curated digital resource designed to further the mission of MWI.
Publicize and propagate MWI content and related information digitally, through social media and other appropriate means.
Contribute to the production of MWI’s network of podcasts with several responsibilities, including hosting, pre/postproduction, and audio editing.
Primary editor for MWI’s new publication, The Journal of War Studies.
Work with MWI’s Director of Research to facilitate the publication of occasional reports and other scholarly publications.
Create collaborative relationships and foster communication with individuals and organizations across academia, government, and the nonprofit and private sectors.
Teach undergraduate Defense and Strategic Studies courses and serve as Deputy Editorial Director for the Modern War Institute (MWI).
As an instructor you will be responsible for teaching, course development, faculty development, cadet development, institutional service, research, advising cadet capstone design and independent research projects, and other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 months. Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic accomplishment (master's degree in Defense and Strategies studies or related field preferred; 2) Demonstrated skill in editorial and digital publishing to include utilizing content management systems (i.e. Word Press). Experience working with or for a defense or international affairs-related publication preferred; 3) Ability to conduct research in a field relevant to the Moder War Institute's mission; 4) Ability to create collaborative relationships and foster communication with individuals in academic, governmental, and non-profit organizations, and private industry; 5) Ability to teach undergraduate-level defense and strategic studies courses.
