The incumbent will perform the duties of a Sewing Machine Operator at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.

Duties

Works harmoniously, cooperatively, and be courteous when communicating with patients, visitors, and employees. Maintains tact and diplomacy when dealing with patients and employees. Works with various personnel in harmony as a team member or as an individual. Works closely with other services daily and supports collaboration with various personnel. Alters and fits uniforms to individual sizes. Selects the proper types and colors of thread to be used. Selects proper size, color, and type of button, zipper, and snaps when replacements are made. Inspects uniforms for damage and determines the nature and extend of repairs. Maintains work area and equipment clean, neat, and tidy, as well as maintain the general appearance of the immediate area. Maintains records of uniforms determined unserviceable and beyond economical repair. Accounts for uniforms, conduct inventories, audits, and surveys as assigned. Maintains record card with assigned laundry number will be made for VA employees who have their personally owned uniforms. Maintains printed and electronic files containing sensitive data which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policies. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent lifts and carries boxes of uniforms. Physical effort and conditions are not constant. Incumbent may be required to sit for long periods of time and subject to eye strain in performing sewing activities. May be required to climb a step ladder when stocking uniforms on shelves. Hand and eye coordination is required in all tasks of the position. Muscular effort is used in manipulating electric controls with feet, knees, legs, and hands in feeding material through the sewing machine. Must be mentally alert when working with industrial type sewing machines. Must be alert to and report safety hazards and equipment malfunctions to immediate supervisors. Reports and completes required accident report and report it in required time frame in event of an on the job injury. Incumbent must be capable of making minor adjustments to and proper cleaning and oiling of industrial sewing machines. Incumbent uses scissors, razor blades, snap fastener tools and other hand tools which are subject to cause injury unless handled properly. Incumbent will be required to operate heave duty industrial type sewing machine, heat patch machine, marking machine and any other machine assigned. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
