About the Position: A Power Plant Senior Mechanic has the responsibility for planning, organizing, directing and participating in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of all mechanical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consists of a powerhouse, switchyards, dam or dams and related works.
Duties
Assist higher level management engaged in special studies designed to improve maintenance techniques and equipment reliability.
Furnish special technical and practical guidance to trainees participating in the training program for powerplant personnel.
Operate gas and electric welding equipment, including automatic welding machine for turbine cavitation repairs.
Issue work assignments to subordinates, outlines methods to be used, and furnishes technical instructions on more difficult operations.
Operate various machine shop equipment such as lathes, shapers, drill presses, bench grinders, hydraulic presses, pipe threaders, and various air or electric portable tools such as drills, grinders, impact wrenches and brazing torches.

Ability to perform the most difficult and complex Power Plant Senior Mechanic tasks including installing, modifying, maintaining and repairing all mechanical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consists of a powerhouse, dam or dams, and related works; using hydro generators, sluice gates and spillway gates for power production and flood control; and inspecting and testing mechanical equipment to insure that the preventive and operating maintenance program meets established standards.

Ability to perform the full range of Power Plant Senior Mechanic tasks including operating various shop equipment such as drill press, bench grinders, hydraulic press, saw, and various air and electrical portable tools, such as drills, grinders, impact wrench, solder gun and brazing torch to rework or build new parts for the major and auxiliary equipment; and solving routine problems contacted in daily assignments and bringing major maintenance problems to the attention of superiors and suggests solutions to these problems.

Physical Effort - Handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and lifting and operating heavy and awkward hand tools. Many tasks require significant brute force. The incumbent is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
Working Conditions - Work is primarily performed inside the power plant, outlet works, intake structures, and spillway structure where constant noise and vibration of generating equipment is present. Hazards include moving machinery, working on preheated metals, danger of injury from burns, cuts, dust, welding fumes, and flying particles of metal when performing chipping,Grinding, and welding. There may be occasional exposure to electrical shock hazards. Often works in cramped quarters for extended periods of time. Subject to falls from scaffolds and ladders, hazards of paring cables or slings and overhead traveling cranes and exposure to working in cold damp areas. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions and its use is mandatory.
