This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) for an Army brigade-sized unit, under the direction of the Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) Brigade Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR). A recruitment/relocation/retention incentive and salary negotiation will not be available.

Duties

Provide individual and group occupational therapy services to Soldiers to promote performance optimization, and prevention, risk mitigation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic disorders. Administer standardized assessments and screenings to individual Soldiers and unit. Develop and implement comprehensive, goal-oriented treatment and performance plans for Soldiers, evaluating progress and modifying as necessary. Utilize therapeutic modalities, such as air and water, therapeutic exercise, functional therapy, and manual therapy. Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team that assesses, plans, directs, coordinates, and updates individual and group interventions and programming. Develop, implement, and maintain Continuous Quality Improvement activities. Document all applicable medical information, including assessments, interventions, progress, training provided, and functional/occupational status. Performs educational programs, such as, mental and sleep readiness.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • May require overtime and/or other than normal duty hours for data collection, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • This position may require a government cell phone and be required to be in an On-Call after hours or on weekends.
  • The work requires physical exertion that includes lifting of moderately heavy items to include treatment tables, exercise equipment (weights), research data collection equipment, military equipment used by Soldiers (for familiarity).
  • This work requires exertion to perform exercises used in physical performance and rehabilitation, including all events in the Army Combat Fitness Test.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Employee may be required to work later in the day and/or on weekends, as scheduled by the supervisor.
  • May be required to attend and complete all program identified training.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes implementing occupational therapy interventions and educating on occupational therapy programs or evaluating occupational therapy results. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Kinesiotherapy, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Exercise Science or related field of study. OR Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. In addition to meeting the requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the license requirement listed below: Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, valid, and unrestricted license as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
