Duties

Materials Handlers (Fire Warehouse Workers) primary duties include to receive and check quantities of incoming items as shown on purchasing/shipping documents and place items in bulk storage areas or bins. Additional duties include locating/packaging items for issue or shipment according to requisitions and other documents; stocking, selecting, and assembling items for shipment under general supervision. May transport supplies and equipment to various locations and assist in loading/unloading vehicles at field locations. The worker frequently lifts and carries supplies, materials, and equipment that weigh 50-70 pounds with some items being heavier. Due to the emergency nature of firefighting operations supported workers may be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time.

Qualifications

WG-04: Under general supervision, Materials Handlers at this level have the skill and knowledge to manually stock, arrange and rotate items according to the size, stock numbers, age of items etc. They use hand trucks, dollies, and similar manual equipment to move stock. They use hammers, pliers, and other hand tools to open containers, break wire bands and perform other similar tasks. They understand the general layout of a storage area and how items are identified. They are able to match received/stored items with shipping documents and requisitions. They may operate vehicles or accompany vehicle operators to transport supplies and equipment to various locations, including loading and unloading vehicles. Physical Effort: Works on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops, and in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Duties require the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Heavier items may occasionally be lifted with assistance of lifting devices or other workers. May work on steep terrain covered slash and debris. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, often in the presence of dirt, dust, grease, and fumes. Assignments involve exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, cuts, bruises and infects. Workers may be exposed to bad weather. Duties often require the use of protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
